Framework battery extension

Hey all, i was wondering if theres an option to remove speakers (virtually everyone is using various bluetooth headsets anyway) and buy a bigger battery for the upcoming 13 pro? thanks!

No

It wouldn’t make much sense to develop a larger battery for a fairly niche use case, as most would rather keep the built-in speakers for one of sounds like notification sounds, etc.

i dont think thats fair. any1 i see outside of their home is using some sort of wireless headset. in fact even at home most ppl are, because built-in microphone audio quality is garbage and you usually live with other ppl which dont necessarily want to listen to whatever you are listening. so using the built-in speakers is a niche use case

I think you under estiment the development cost of a battery.

Anyone that want to sell a battery have to pay the tooling cost, something I would ques, without any inside into the industry, would be somewhere between $10 - $100k. they would also have to modify the firmware, as confirmed by framework, to utilise the greater capacity.

Their also exist support costs to consider, as it can be confusing to users if their exist no speakers, and how a battery might be related.

While I would also like that I doubt it’s going to happen as us speaker not at all users are apparently quite in the minority.

Maybe at some point I find some better use for that space.

nobody suggests to make it a default, so I’m not sure why you all take that personally. its just a compelling option that many ppl will consider

We are likely much too small a sub-group to make a custom battery for unfortunately. Don’t think anybody is taking that personally though.

I can a sure you that i’m not taking it personally, until relatively recently I would count myself as part of the “never” user.

But things changes, and I’m quiet happy that I have speakers for the few times I do use them, mainly playing games at home ( I used to play my games with sound off, but nostalgia cought up to me while playing openrct2 ).

It doesn’t matter how many users use headsets often or usually or most of the time.

What matters is that the users who would never miss the speakers are very likely a small niche group. That means never watching a movie with others, never showing a youtube clip to somebody else, never listening to some music with others, never missing notification sounds. No backup when headsdet is broken, forgotten or battery empty.

We do exist though but most likely not in large enough numbers to warrant a custom battery.

Has anyone done the math on how much more capacity we’d even get? The speakers aren’t that large iirc.

This. I feel no speakers is a non-starter.

It limits the number of interested buyers too much. And it could make for some poor publicity. Does any other laptop forgo speakers in order to squeeze in more battery? Doesn’t matter that it would be only an option, there will be jabs that Framework had to remove speakers to get the best battery life. The truth sure doesn’t matter for clickbait headlines.

What I think you should ask is, how about reduced size speakers for those that almost never use them. Some cell phones manage good volume out of what are really very small speakers. And with the 13 Pro having side-firing speakers grills, this make shrinking the speakers & giving the room to a wider battery easier.

Having the option would be fine. But people here don’t consider that adding options comes at a cost (R&D, inventory management, etc…) and those costs need to be justified. If the demand is tiny then it’s simply not worth the hassle just to squeeze out a little bit more battery life. Especially when the pro already promises around 20 hours. People who value battery life highly will just get the pro.

Jumping from 8 hours to 20 is a huge jump. Going from 20 to 22 or whatever not so much.
