Framework Laptop 13 61Wh Battery UK availability

Framework Laptop 13 61Wh Battery has been unavailable in the Marketplace (UK) for quite a loooong time (several months). Is there a supply issue holding things up? When can we expect 61Wh batteries to be made available again to UK customers?

2nd this! Shut up and take my money!

It’s been six weeks since this question was posed - please could a Framework staff member provide some information?

Reply received from Framework support - “we still do not have an ETA for the 61W battery’s availability”. No explanation as to why they’re not available. Meanwhile, the battery on my device is sitting at 80% capacity and worsening.

Meanwhile, I order a replacement battery for a Lenovo P14 at work and it arrives NEXT DAY. This is the reason why we will still not consider Framework for a professional setting; we need laptops and parts available at all times.

C’mon folks, your main core value is repairability… how are we supposed to repair our equipment if it takes months to get hold of an essential, consumable part.

Any chance of an update on the status of this situation from Framework staff? We would like to buy new batteries from you (and have been waiting rather a long time).

To be honest, it is starting to seem rather rude to UK customers that FW staff apparently can’t be bothered to post any response to this, even just a holding one.

Update - contact support, and they will create a special order after interrogating why you need one, asking for screenshots of your current battery health and then escalating the ticket.

Such difficulty to get a simple replacement part. I really want to like Framework and I love the laptop, but their support for current products is worrisome. At what point will they simply give up selling parts for the FW13 altogether?

a few things to mention here.

This is a community forum, which means that this is a platform for community members to communicate, discuss etc. not a place to get official answers from Framework. if you have a question, reaching out to the support is the right thing to do to get an answer from framework.

The battery is not OOS for UK only, but for other regions as well. nothing specific to UK.

You can reach out to support team and they can help you purchase one.

Not sure why you are worried, are there any other parts that you can not purchase?

I received an email saying it’s in stock now but the order system gives me the following error message when I try to order it (on its own):

Sorry, we only have stock of that item at one warehouse. You can only purchase it when combined with a laptop order.

I don’t want another laptop; I already have one hence why I’m buying this part for it!

Following Colm_Donnelly’s message above, I opened a support ticket to request a special order for this but I was told they’re no longer able to create manual orders (even though they were previously able to) because “it is not available from site recently”.

I was also told that stock would available soon but they weren’t able to give an estimated timeframe. Given the lack of availability for many months, I don’t think I’ll believe this until it actually happens.

I feel a bit disheartened by this whole situation. Evidently, there must be stock of this part since new Laptop 13s are being sold with it but clearly new buyers are being prioritised over existing owners. This really doesn’t feel consistent with the ethos of Framework.

It is possible they are waiting for the complete rollout of the battery extender thing before shipping any more 61wh batteries to avoid having to give everyone extended warranty.

I think stable BIOS updates which include the battery extender feature have already been released for 11th and 12th gen Intel mainboards which are the 2 generations which shipped before the 61Wh battery came out.

Guess it may not be that then.

Edit: actually nevermind the battery extender bios for at least the core ultra is still in beta and was just released. So might still be it.

My concern is that a crucial, consumable part is not available to existing customers, but is available to new customers via a configured laptop. I know there must be logistics issues at play here. but Miren_Radia is right…this contradicts Framework’s ethos, and the very reason why people buy Frameworks.

The fact that a part that is replacement for a configurable SKU has not been available direct to consumer for over 6 months, and the very ethos of the company is consumer-agency repairability and modability, is absolutely unacceptable.

For comparison, I’ve had two next-day deliveries for replacement batteries and one replacement logic board last week for Lenovo X1Cs and a T14. A company that doesn’t make repairability the core of their ethos.

Thanks for the explanation, I understand your concerns better now. They were available in the Marketplace for a certain amount of time and it should be back in stock soon.

I would like to share my further experiences on this topic, which proceeded from my taking up the suggestion above to contact customer support to arrange a purchase. Skip to the end for TL;DR.

The first response to my request from FWSupport:

To confirm, may we please ask the reason why you would need to purchase a 61Wh battery? Was it because the laptop’s battery fails and the laptop cannot be use due t the lack of battery? Or do you want to have an extra battery for you to use?

My reply:

The existing 55 Wh battery has degraded rather quickly since purchase and does not give the duration of use I need from the machine. I’ve attached a battery report html file from the Windows batteryreport utility.

The response from FWSupport:
Thank you for your response and for sending the battery report.
Upon checking, your battery is still in good condition as shown. The only time the battery is in critical condition is when the full charge capacity is going below 50% of the design capacity.
Please be advised that before switching to a 61Wh battery, you need to make sure that the BIOS is updated to the latest version to utilize the full capacity of the battery on your laptop and the extenders and retimers.
We hope this helps.

My reply:

This response doesn’t actually help with my support request, which is to purchase a 61 Wh battery, in response to advice from FW that raising a support request is the way to do this.

The BIOS has been updated to v3.17 following the June deployment, so the machine is ready for the new battery.

Response from FWSupport:

Thank you for your response.
We have decided to process a manual order for the Battery.

My reply:

That’s appreciated. Please could I add the following items to this order alongside the 61 Wh battery?:….[other items]

Response from FWSupport:

We’ve escalated your ticket for manual order processing, and one of our staff members will be back with you soon with additional instructions.

Further response from (different) FWSupport:

We have received your request to create an order. At this time we are unfortunately out of stock for your requested 61Wh battery. For this reason, we are unable to assist in processing the order for you.

If you have signed up for notifications, you will continue to receive updates on stock availability. In the meantime, you may proceed to order the other parts from our Marketplace.

My reply:

I understand that the marketplace is stating this is out of stock, and it has been for at least 10 months or even longer. I’ve been waiting for it to be restocked and have had notifications for it switched on since October 2024. I received a notification that it was back in stock last month, but that was not reflected on the website. That is why I raised a support request, as I was instructed on the community forum by Framework staff to do so.

FW Support confirmed that a manual order would be set up, now that offer has effectively been retracted, with the claim that the item is out of stock. Users know very well that it’s not out of stock and we are left without any understanding of why Framework is unable to supply this part to the existing user base when it is clearly able to do so for new customers buying brand new laptops. It’s really not good enough for a brand with a mission to ensure longevity and repairability.

Your staff have confirmed that this can be supplied, so I feel that this should be honoured. Flipflopping is not going to help ensure repeat business or support.

Response from FWSupport:

Thank you for your patience and for sharing your experience with us. We understand how disappointing it is to know that what we initially offered could not be fulfilled, and we apologize if we fell short of your expectations.

We wanted to let you know that the 61WH battery was out of stock for a long time due to requiring BIOS updates so it would function properly. Once those were rolled out for all Framework Laptop 13 devices, we allowed purchases again which quickly sold out. Rest assured that we are working to restock them as soon as possible. While we do not have an exact date on when the battery will be back in stock, our Supply and Logistics team are actively working on this.

Please note that new devices came from a different fulfillment center than your regional fulfillment center. It is for this reason that batteries come with new laptops but cannot be purchased by itself. We seek your kind understanding.

So in summary: it’s ‘out of stock’ to existing customers seeking to repair or upgrade their machine, but not ‘out of stock’ to users purchasing a completely new machine. ‘Manual orders’ via customer support (as advised by staff on this thread) will not be processed (or honoured, even after being offered).

What’s even more absurd is that, at the current time of writing, the UK marketplace is now listing the 55 Wh battery as ‘out of stock’ as well. So basically, if your battery has gone kaput and you need a replacement one….TOUGH: BUY A NEW LAPTOP.

If the Supply and Logistics team are ‘actively working’ on this, why is it taking over a year to succeed in this effort, and meanwhile stocks of the earlier 55 Wh batteries have been extinguished. I would be asking quite a few questions of my Supply and Logistics management about their performance, if this is being ‘actively’, yet fruitlessly, worked on for such a long time.

What on earth is going on here? This is not what we signed up (and forked out) to support.

Thanks for sharing this. It illustrates what a frustrating situation we’re in.

I do hope Framework sorts this out soon but, given how long it’s taken already, I don’t have much hope.

Please note that new devices came from a different fulfillment center than your regional fulfillment center. It is for this reason that batteries come with new laptops but cannot be purchased by itself. We seek your kind understanding.

If regional fulfillment centers have basically had no stock for the best part of a year, have they considered that they could move some stock from the fulfillment center with stock to the regional ones?

Regarding the battery and ordering.

I think the problem might be that the web site does not let you order something that is out of stock.

This seems like an odd approach to me.

If you could order the battery, even though it is out of stock. At least that would flag up a demand for batteries in your part of the world, and FW would then know how many to send there. It might take a bit longer to get the battery, but at least you could order it and it would eventually arrive.

The situation is ridiculous. I’ve had an email notification ‘back in stock’. The following day I go to the website and it’s ‘coming soon’ again…
