Whenever I use my laptop on my lap and I put it at a slight angle (maybe 15 degrees) it goes to sleep. Full screen off and keyboard/fingerprint button light off. The only way to wake it again is to hold it at a different angle, or none at all. This makes no sense to me. Help!
Is there something like a magnet along the left side of the laptop when you do this? The lid switch is magnetic so the laptop might be thinking the lid is closed.
Interesting coincidence - just searched forum if anyone has similar to my problem, and found this thread.
Problem: when I working on my brand new (just got it a few days ago) Framework 13 AMD laptop and needed to go with it to another room, I took it by holding it for the left corner of the case (lid is open, laptop is powered on), it randomly crashes and restarts. I hope this happens because the chassis is light, flexible, and bends when I carry it by the left corner. This might cause some SSD contact to disconnect, or something similar. I can live with it. Another (much worse) reason could be a crack in the motherboard. Just curious if this is expected behavior and if someone has similar issues.
Not sure if this is related to the magnet, but I’ve seen a similar “issue” holding my laptop at certain angles and got a scare a few times that my laptop wasn’t working any more, and it didn’t make sense.
In one case, my laptop didn’t seem to turn on when I had placed it on top of a MacBook. Turns out the magnet of the MacBook was triggering the lid sensor, and it thought the lid was closed. In another case, same thing, I had the laptop on my lap but my Jabra earphone case (with magnets) was in my left pocket and triggering the lid sensor. Just something to be aware of.
Something with a magnet triggering it is always my first thought. As I’ve read a lot of people post that they discovered that’s what it was. Only one single time that I recall did someone post that they needed to replace the sensor.
If you’re sure there is no object of any kind near the laptop when this happens (magnets can be in things you do not expect), then you can try replacing the “audio board kit”. The lid sensor is located on that board. But I’d first even go so far as to make sure you aren’t wearing any rings on your fingers, some can become slightly magnetic, so it’s a possiblity.
I’ve had the exact same issue since I got my Framework. I’ve noticed it both when holding/placing it at certain angles, and when placed on another laptop?
I find that the fastest way to get it to wake up is just closing/reopening the lid.
Several people have discovered that placing it on another laptop can trigger the lid sensor. The magnet in the other laptop, for its lid sensor, is likely the cause. Other laptop can be effected just the same. Iirc someone mentioned that some Apple laptops will also get triggered if they are placed on top of a Framework.
I had similar problems with my laptop randomly hibernating when I had it on my lap. The problem was the magnetic lid sensor, which is located on the audio board on middle left side of the laptop. Swapping the audio board fixed the problem. Cost less than $20USD and took five minutes. FW support would probably have just sent me one, but they’ve already done a lot for me, so I took care of it myself. (I really abuse my laptop.)
