Framework Laptop 13 external monitor does not connect

Problem: Cannot connect to external monitor

Hey team, having intermittent connectivity problems with an external monitor (ASUS 23.8” 1080P Monitor (VA24DCP)). Currently not connecting.

I’ve tried

  • rebooting, updating drivers, etc.
  • Connecting the monitor via USB-c and HDMI (via USB-c hub) and tried changing the various cables. I’ve also tried plugging into different expansion card slots.

Nothing seems to work

Debugging:

  • The monitor connects perfectly fine to a second laptop (MacBook Pro)
  • The USB-c hub also appears to be working fine as the other peripherals are recognized by the Framework laptop
  • I also tried connecting a 2nd external monitor (via HDMI) to the Framework to see if it was that specific monitor. Framework did not detect this monitor either.

So, it doesn’t appear to be related to the cables, specific expansion port, or the monitor itself. It appears to either be a Windows issue or something to do with the Framework laptop.

Any help much appreciated!

Hello @Alex_W,

Welcome to the community. Not all USB-C hubs are created equal. There is a lot of communication behind the scenes to get devices to talk properly when connecting over USB-C.

To help isolate that the monitor is working fine, try connecting just the power to one side of the Framework Laptop and a HDMI expansion card on the opposite side and plugging in the monitor cable this way. If the laptop recognizes the monitor then it could be an issue with the USB-C hub (we have seen a number of hubs not act as intended with Framework but will work fine with Macbooks, Dell, and HP laptops)

As another test, you could download and make an Ubuntu USB and boot to the “Live” version to test out the same connections you have tried before. If everything works on Ubuntu, then it is something with the Windows installation/configuration.

The monitor you are connecting to is just a 1080p one so it is not like it is trying to drive a 4K output which can be more demanding of the output.

You might file a ticket with support to have them help isolate what the issue could be. The forum is just end users offering help and advice.

Thanks!

  • I’ll have to purchase an HDMI expansion card to attempt your suggestion.
  • I’ve tried a second USB hub and receive the same problem. I’ve also tried plugging the monitor in via USB instead of HDMI and have the same issue.

And yes, I’ve submitted a support ticket as well.
