Framework Laptop 13 Pro and highlights from the Framework [Next Gen] Event

Earlier today, we hosted our Framework [Next Gen] Event, where we announced Framework Laptop 13 Pro, updates to Framework Laptop 16, and previews of the OCuLink Dev Kit and the Framework Wireless Touchpad Keyboard. You can watch a recording of the full event livestream on the Framework YouTube channel. Six years into our existence as a company, these new products represent a step change in our capabilities. We have the scale and resources to build the products you want from us and to deliver on our mission of remaking consumer electronics. Each one of the updates is in response to the asks you’ve made of us over the years.

First, Framework Laptop 13 Pro is a complete ground up redesign that brings a massive leap in battery life with Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 Processors, a 74Wh battery, and LPCAMM2 memory, a new full CNC aluminum chassis, our first purpose-built power-optimized display with touch support, an excellent feeling haptics touchpad, an option for pre-loaded Ubuntu, and much more. In many ways, this product has been six years in the making. We’ve taken all of the feedback you’ve given us on the first seven generations of Framework Laptop 13 to make this the ultimate portable developer and power user machine. Battery life is what you’ve asked for most, and we’ve delivered on this. On Netflix 4k streaming for example, we’re getting over 20 hours of battery life, which is not only 12 hours longer than we got on the previous-generation Framework Laptop 13, but it’s actually slightly longer than a 14-inch MacBook Pro M5! With all of this, it’s still a Framework Laptop, meaning it’s repairable, upgradeable, customizable, and entirely yours to do what you want with. Framework Laptop 13 Pro is available to pre-order today, starting at $1,199 USD for DIY Edition and $1,499 USD for pre-built configurations, with first shipments in June.

We posted two videos on Framework Laptop 13 Pro to the Framework YouTube channel, a deep dive on the product, and a side-by-side comparison and upgrade guide with the original Framework Laptop 13. You can also check out the blog post we published for more detail on it.

Next, we introduced the latest updates to Framework Laptop 16, bringing one piece haptic touchpad and one piece keyboard options, along with a new Bezel color and a Ryzen 5 processor configuration. We’re also previewing a new OCuLink Dev Kit that enables extremely high throughput peripherals like eGPUs. Framework Laptop 16 is truly the ultimate portable workstation platform, with the flexibility of a desktop PC in a thin, robust magnesium and aluminum 16" chassis. All of the new updates take in the feedback you’ve given us over the last two years to both extend on modularity and level up performance and refinement. You can learn more on both the updates to Framework Laptop 16 and the OCuLink Dev Kit in this blog post.

Finally, we’re excited to preview the Framework Wireless Touchpad Keyboard, a compact keyboard with integrated touchpad that is excellent for living room use, setting up computers, and mounting into sim rigs. As we were developing Framework Desktop and using it in these scenarios, we found that there was just one popular keyboard in this segment, and it was one that neither we nor the broader community particularly liked. We knew we could do better, and so we did! Our keyboard uses the same great-feeling mechanical key structure and touchpad architecture that we put in Framework Laptop 12. A highly power-efficient Nordic nRF54 radio and open source ZMK Firmware enable pairing four BLE and USB-A Dongle hosts along with wired USB-C connectivity. In addition to the dongle, which is storable in the back of the keyboard, we’re developing a USB-A Adapter Expansion Card that allows it to sit flush in a Framework Laptop or Desktop. We’re sharing this preview of Framework Wireless Touchpad Keyboard to give developers an early start on building around it. You can learn more about this in the blog post we published.

Six years in, we’re not only continuing to deliver on the original promise, we’re bringing it to an entirely new level. We wanted to prove that you can have products that are refined, robust, and high performance, that still respect your rights through repairability, upgradeability, and the power to choose the software you want to run on them. We’re confident we have achieved this, but more importantly, we’re excited to see if you agree!

Very cool announcements. The two-toned keyboard looks really nice. Psyched to drop my 7040 mainboard into a new chassis!

What’s the weight difference between the old chassis and the new one?

Any way we could get those dope animated videos/desktop wallpapers to use on our frameworks?

Couldn’t find any timeline when those upgrade kits would be available. they seem to be “getting interest” phase on the marketplace.

The Upgrade Kits should be available around the same time that device pre-orders are being shipped. Unfortunately we do not have an exact date to share, but is something we are also making sure we have the guide available showing how to install the different kits.

Guides for the Framework Laptop 13 Pro will be available here: Framework Laptop 13 Pro - Framework Guides

  • (I am the person in charge of our guides :raising_hands:. I know this page is mostly blank, but this way you have it for when our guides are published)
  • We will be working very hard to make sure guides are available ASAP, but want to make sure they are the best they can be and will reflect the same steps you or anyone else would need to follow.
  • I mention this as guides could possibly be made now, but might not have the same protective peels, covers, etc and other things that will be shipped to those who order them. This creates confusion, issues, and inconsistencies between our guide and what people will have in their hands; which we want to avoid.

TLDR; Kits should become available around same time device pre-order batches are being shipped AFAIK. Guides are to come ASAP once things (protective peels, covers, etc) are finalized.

I would like to swap the touchpad to the new haptic touchpad in my 13. I don’t see a the new touchpad kit in the shop yet, only the old one. When will it be available?

Just getting the chance to catch up now, but it looks like the video of the livestream have been made Private?

Check their [YouTube] channel, when I looked they had uploaded an VOD.

1.3 kg for OG FW and 1.4 kg for FW Pro

i know it’s not new-new because it’s also on the 12 (i’ve got a 13), but from a physical accessibility standpoint, the easier release latch for expansion cards, and the touchscreen, are both awesome for one-handed use. now to save up for those chassis and screen upgrades…
