Framework Laptop 16 pre-orders are now open

Barring a disaster, it’ll be Q1 2024

True, we don’t have an actual 45W to 45W comparison unfortunately.

My thinking was that at 65W there is probably enough thermal headroom for the CPUs to hit their max turbo frequencies for the duration of the test, and even so there is still only a 1-3% difference. At 45W, my thinking is that both CPUs will be under thermal throttle much sooner where neither one will be at full turbo frequency for very long, and instead settle down at a frequency that is dictated by the thermals.

These CPUs are probably just different bins of the same die, so exact performance is going to be dependent on the silicon lottery and be somewhat different per CPU. The 7940HS is probably a higher binned CPU, so it stands to reason that it probably will have a slightly lower core voltage making it slightly more efficient and able to reach higher frequencies for a given thermal limit.

But, all of that is conjecture. It would have been nice to have seen an actual 45W to 45W comparison to see if it is still just a 1-3% difference, or if the gap widens.

For me, The 7840HS is already such a vastly superior CPU compared to any of my other laptops or desktops. It even looks better than the dual 14-core (E5-2680v4) server system that I just pulled from production a few months ago, that was near top of the line 6-7 years ago, and used to run 10-20 production VMs at our datacenter.

Personally, I am not worried about leaving 1-3% on the table, and would rather spend the $200 difference on maxing out the RAM at 64GB and/or bigger/faster SSD.

my guess is that since this is their first RGB keyboard, they are using the US English market as a test to make sure it’s good, and will start making RGB keyboards for different languages based on the feedback they get from the first one.

In for pre-order. Please consider adding an easel touch screen option! I’ll click the pre-order/buy button on that as soon as it’s available.

I tried as soon as I saw the email but would have been in batch 5 (dang time zone!). Re-looked at my priorities and my history of use and decided to stay with my current batch 3 13" Ryzen pre-order.

Looks great though.

That sure looks promising indeed!

Pre-orders for Framework Laptop 16 are now open and there’s no ortholinear/ergonomic keyboard on it. I guess there aren’t enough fans of ergonomic keyboards to justify the investment. I’m going to find another solution for my next computer, but I’m very disappointed, because the Framework Laptop 16 would have been excellent for me.

You know what comes to my mind?

There is always someone who is disappointed, no matter how hard you try to please everybody.

Not saying you should just give up and get a computer which is not your type of perfect, but people are so different that it’s very hard, especially for a small company, to make it right for everyone.

There is currently the possibility that DIY or 3rd party custom orthogonal/ergonomic keyboards could be done. Framework is trying to bring us single key units to enable it.

Thank you for this information. <3
I will then continue to keep myself informed about the possible availability of ergonomic/split keyboards for the Framework Laptop 16.

That’s not angled enough to be a true ALICE board. Arms/wrists are not straight when you hold them out.

hello, I have been watching the Framework 16 laptop for a while now, and am almost ready to make a pre-order, but I have only two questions:
one, when will the expansion bay graphics card be added to the marketplace?
and two how much will it cost?

It’s mostly just a slight difference in base and boost clocks, but the 7940HS also technically supports EXPO memory overclocking, and curve optimizer voltage adjustment (for undervolting), though I image those features depend on framework integrating the options into their bios, so it’s not guaranteed they’ll be available on either sku.

If under volting is supported then I chose the correct CPU. Although, you can always go into power management and lower the boost percentage or whatever it was. The CPU is usually what makes the fans go into hyper drive.

I believe the plan is that the Framework 16 parts will be added to the Marketplace after the Framework 16 starts shipping. The Graphics Module may take longer as they will want to fill all the pre-orders before they start shipping out marketplace orders, as it would be unfair to those who pre-ordered if other users get modules before them by using the Marketplace.

LTT review when? (Please say soon)

While I’m sure that LTT will get a sample to show off on video, I don’t imagine we’ll ever really get a proper review from the channel. The conflict of interest is too great.

Point. But he’ll be positioned to give some kind of long term review. Just a grain of salt required.

Did he give a long-term review of FW13? I don’t remember that he did it.
So if there is none for FW13 then we shouldn’t expect more for FW16.

I am looking to make this my desktop replacement. How many external monitors will this support with the graphics module? My current setup has 4 QHD monitors that I would like to retain.
