Framework supporting far-right racists?

It was auto closing due to flag reports. I removed that so that the topic will remain open now.

Framework hasn’t had a PR kerfuffle like this before, so the automatic topic closing due to reports wasn’t designed to handle a situation like this

While some may be upset over the particular projects promoted and sponsored, I am disappointed in the response to the OP and think a clear sponsor and endorsement policy should be in place.

Also you are ignoring the DHH part, which I haven’t myself looked into but seems to be pretty serious.

people are mad about framework supporting omarchy. it’s not only hyprland. omarchy’s leader is a worse racist.

Excluding the laptops sent to tons of distros so that they can test them in advance, they haven’t given Omarchy any money, only Hyprland.

I 100% agree that DHH has some far-right beliefs that I find repugnant, but my post was only about the fact that they’re only directly financially supporting hyprland and not DHH.

I’ve been out of the community (and generally HW dev) for a while now, getting out of a prolonged burnout episode worsened by a bad health background. As someone who used to do a whole lot of Framework third-party HW/helping people within community/general Framework advocacy, and still do (just on a smaller scale), I’ve been sent this link a number of times today. Hope I have something helpful to contribute.

Even on its face, this looks like a dumb action for Framework to take, unless it’s meant to manufacture controversy. I’ve been seeing heaps of Omarchy posts on social media before I knew anything about DHH’s numerous indecencies, and the outstanding focus on Omarchy specifically was surprising. At the time, I assumed it was just that good-looking and functional. However, the longer that posting lasted, the more social media objections I saw, and at some point I decided to look into it.

Now that I’ve learned about DHH, If the aim wasn’t to have the Omarchy PR (and funding? damn) blow up, the social media team did a bad job vetting things they focus on. At its very best, it’s just a slow year? Either way, DHH has taken a number of far-right stances to the extent it’s appropriate to call DHH far-right, yet, he’s comfortable lying by misrepresenting his own stance.

Reading DHH’s pseudointellectual writing on things like ADHD, it appears he’s either not very smart or just disingenuous, which are about the only two ways you can start a blog post by pretending social understanding of ADHD equals diagnostic principles as applied by medical professionals, and then never engaging with the diagnostic principles beyond surface-level limited quoting, or factors like brain function differences. Again, either genuinely dumb, or disingenuous on purpose. This is exactly the kind of person that people will object to supporting.

The world is getting increasingly polarized and politicized. If you’re a company working within one of the few civil rights causes (right to repair and ownership) that isn’t yet politicized, to your sheer luck, it’s not clear to me why you’d want to polarize your standing by giving support to a vocally far-right developer and providing frankly noticeably outsized amounts of PR to his project. This association tangibly makes Framework hard to recommend to others for me, both in my personal and my professional capacity, and overall, it’s just puzzling to see.

yeah Omarchy/DHH is the real problem here, the scale is vastly different.

I see! I am happy to hear that the Hyprland community has gotten better, never participated myself but looking at the images above and remembering the “who/cares” incident makes me think it was horribly toxic.

Please, lets calm down for a moment. I am not even sure if @nrp really understands, what is going on with DHH and his views, and we are already sending the computers back and taking a moral stance. I would wait a little bit and would like to read a proper answer from @nrp (that first one in the beginning did not seem like it), which hopefully comes sometime soon.

I really hope things like this are not detrimental and will be resolved soon.

Its not ok to support extremist and violent views. But then again - for the people here, who are claiming that they send all framework computers back - please then take a good look at your home. Can you find any electronic devices (or components in those devices), which are made in “certain country that threats to invade another smaller country for some time now” ( I am not going to name any names here). If you do, please take a moral stance and return these as well…

My post was only dealing with direct financial support (which only applies to hyprland), since some people here were framing it as though Framework was directly financing DHH.

Can we at least get an apology when it comes to the hysteria and accusations being leveled against their support of hyprland?

from what I can tell there’s no official funding to DHH, just sending laptops for testing which… If you know DHH’s history, is still a bad look. I think Framework needs, at minimum, a pretty rigorous set of rules regarding who they provide hardware and financial support to. I’m looking into the situation with Vaxry and Hyprland though… Things are much muddier here, though nrp’s response isn’t good if he knows Vaxry and Hyprland by extension aren’t actually bad people

Support and promotion, and promotion got to a point it honestly felt laser focused. I’m genuinely surprised at how much Omarchy I’ve been seeing from FW, vs say in general tech youtube spaces. That’s a bit like repeatedly saying “yeah we’ve been making sure Urbit runs on our laptops well and sent laptops to devs, check it out btw”

I don’t pretend that the real world doesn’t exist, you pretend that if somebody has a different opinion than you that means they automatically intend to kill you. And that is frankly a stupid take.

First of all any monetary support was given only to Hyperland which if you look at least 12 secondsy is not a far right organization. All the funding will go towards development of something that is beneficial to all, and if it doesn’t then you can tell framework to pull support.

The D-whatever guy didn’t get any money, the project is fine and the support for the project does not fund the creators stupid ideology either.

You see boogeyman where there isn’t one and as a result nobody will take you seriously on the actual important matters. Fasicsm will not rise from supporting D-whatever, rather it comes from electing fasicsts.

good catch, promotion should fall under that restriction

I am so disappointed and embarrased by all this and @nrp response. I bought a framework laptop because I thought that fixing consumer electronics was necessary, but honestly, I think human rights are more important and more necessary than ever.

After buying my laptop I went to my podcast to proudly say “I put my money where my mouth is”, and I am not only greatly embarrased, but also and for what is worth, I fear that is what Framework has done: they might have put their money where their mouth is.

Now I don’t think I can find a way to retire my money from this company without selling someone else something with a logo that represents such a let down.

I hope that Framework corrects their course as soon as practical and issues an appropriate communication to the community that reflects their actual values beyond the repair ones.

can you link me to where “he had apologized publicly for what was said on that Discord on his blog”
I couldn’t find such a post.

That is a brave step, if you are done with the spring cleaning please do let others know what remained in your home (if anything) to ensure that other people know what to buy.

When you let smelly people in the tent, most other will leave, eventually leaving you with just the bad smell.

closest I can find so far is this Vaxry's Blog

looking here

Key takeaways:

  • The victim misgenders staff on purpose.

  • The victim doesn’t seem to even treat their pronouns seriously, stating it’s only to make people angry.

  • Labelling this as a “harassment campaign” is a joke.

Furthermore, I do believe the situation was handled very unprofessionally, and instead of the nickname change I should’ve just banned them, and for that reason I have apologized a few times and I apologize now as well.

Even though this situation is very old, had been explained, action has been taken, and such an incident has not happened again, Drew still clings onto this argument as his, pretty much only in the entire blogpost, concrete example.

On a bit of a tangent, a situation with ridiculing a single user has happened a few months later, however, for the opposite, for transphobia. More on that further down the article, as it’s unrelated to Drew’s post.

the section in question is a bit weird imo given one of the users involved in the screenshot and their history, but I’m looking into it
