Framework supporting far-right racists?

People really need to calm down. Those projects are first and foremost open source projects. You don’t have to use them, you are not forced into those communities they are not forced upon you either and as such they will not exert any force over you. Framework supports open source projects, not people, not political projects. If you can’t see that, then I feel sorry for you and don’t forget to boycott literally everything else too.

Unfortunately it seems like this is another episode of mass hysteria based on pure hearsay, rumors and somebody else’s accounts of things rather than pure facts. Framework is only financially supporting Hyprland, and even then with only a modest monthly amount (the “Gold” sponsorship is only 600 euros per month). Now regarding the accusations against the lead hyprland developer it’s worthy of note to indicate that he had apologized publicly for what was said on that Discord on his blog, he worked with Drew on having a CODE_OF_CONDUCT (despite his resentment against it) in his community (even though Drew didn’t like that the CODE_OF_CONDUCT that was written didn’t use his specific terms), and the latest moderation changes on his Discord show that he’s committed:

From the perspective of someone who actively engages with the community, I must say I do not see any instances of problems present in most common comments found online, especially the accusation that Hyprland community hosts nazis and transphobes. Let me go on to say that this is wildly incorrect as for the longest time those who spread hateful ideology, such as, but not limited to the previously mentioned groups, have been dealt with swiftly. Those groups of people are NOT tolerated, and they will NEVER be tolerated. Let me make that very clear.

You can also read about the freedesktop saga and you will see that the lead dev again posted nothing that violates the free desktop CoC there but he was banned for allegations outside of the freedesktop platforms, relating to that Discord episode which he apologized for and he fixed the moderation issue now. So what are people mad at exactly? For past mistakes and shortcomings that the lead dev has since fixed (people still keep linking to that outdated Drew DeVault post)? People should absolutely make due diligence and do proper research before coming to conclusions and defaming people as a result.

Time to buy my first framework 13.

Neutral is a thing, and I respect that. Thank you.

Nah not really, just like with Chik-fil-a, the side that dislikes them will still support and buy if the product is good enough because that side doesn’t actually have morals. All Framework needs to do is continue to have the best product.

usecase for temporarily closing this topic?
usecase for postponing automatic topic reopening?

It was auto closing due to flag reports. I removed that so that the topic will remain open now.

Framework hasn’t had a PR kerfuffle like this before, so the automatic topic closing due to reports wasn’t designed to handle a situation like this

While some may be upset over the particular projects promoted and sponsored, I am disappointed in the response to the OP and think a clear sponsor and endorsement policy should be in place.

Also you are ignoring the DHH part, which I haven’t myself looked into but seems to be pretty serious.

people are mad about framework supporting omarchy. it’s not only hyprland. omarchy’s leader is a worse racist.

Excluding the laptops sent to tons of distros so that they can test them in advance, they haven’t given Omarchy any money, only Hyprland.

I 100% agree that DHH has some far-right beliefs that I find repugnant, but my post was only about the fact that they’re only directly financially supporting hyprland and not DHH.

I’ve been out of the community (and generally HW dev) for a while now, getting out of a prolonged burnout episode worsened by a bad health background. As someone who used to do a whole lot of Framework third-party HW/helping people within community/general Framework advocacy, and still do (just on a smaller scale), I’ve been sent this link a number of times today. Hope I have something helpful to contribute.

Even on its face, this looks like a dumb action for Framework to take, unless it’s meant to manufacture controversy. I’ve been seeing heaps of Omarchy posts on social media before I knew anything about DHH’s numerous indecencies, and the outstanding focus on Omarchy specifically was surprising. At the time, I assumed it was just that good-looking and functional. However, the longer that posting lasted, the more social media objections I saw, and at some point I decided to look into it.

Now that I’ve learned about DHH, If the aim wasn’t to have the Omarchy PR (and funding? damn) blow up, the social media team did a bad job vetting things they focus on. At its very best, it’s just a slow year? Either way, DHH has taken a number of far-right stances to the extent it’s appropriate to call DHH far-right, yet, he’s comfortable lying by misrepresenting his own stance.

Reading DHH’s pseudointellectual writing on things like ADHD, it appears he’s either not very smart or just disingenuous, which are about the only two ways you can start a blog post by pretending social understanding of ADHD equals diagnostic principles as applied by medical professionals, and then never engaging with the diagnostic principles beyond surface-level limited quoting, or factors like brain function differences. Again, either genuinely dumb, or disingenuous on purpose. This is exactly the kind of person that people will object to supporting.

The world is getting increasingly polarized and politicized. If you’re a company working within one of the few civil rights causes (right to repair and ownership) that isn’t yet politicized, to your sheer luck, it’s not clear to me why you’d want to polarize your standing by giving support to a vocally far-right developer and providing frankly noticeably outsized amounts of PR to his project. This association tangibly makes Framework hard to recommend to others for me, both in my personal and my professional capacity, and overall, it’s just puzzling to see.

yeah Omarchy/DHH is the real problem here, the scale is vastly different.

I see! I am happy to hear that the Hyprland community has gotten better, never participated myself but looking at the images above and remembering the “who/cares” incident makes me think it was horribly toxic.

Please, lets calm down for a moment. I am not even sure if @nrp really understands, what is going on with DHH and his views, and we are already sending the computers back and taking a moral stance. I would wait a little bit and would like to read a proper answer from @nrp (that first one in the beginning did not seem like it), which hopefully comes sometime soon.

I really hope things like this are not detrimental and will be resolved soon.

Its not ok to support extremist and violent views. But then again - for the people here, who are claiming that they send all framework computers back - please then take a good look at your home. Can you find any electronic devices (or components in those devices), which are made in “certain country that threats to invade another smaller country for some time now” ( I am not going to name any names here). If you do, please take a moral stance and return these as well…
