Framework supporting far-right racists?

That’s not an excuse, just really mad community management. If he felt he couldn’t make a proper response due to the timing of the post, but felt he had to acknowledge the response due to the nature of the topic, he could’ve just said “This is a serious topic and we need to investigate it before responding.” Now he responded in a way that makes it sound like this really is their philosophy, and while they can keep it I won’t recommend their products until the company aligns more with my views, as that was one of the main reasons to purchase a framework laptop for me.

Oh I’m absolutely with you on that point. Nirav’s original reply was pretty unfortunate and a good demonstration why most companies are extremely careful with their communication.

I would still like to give them a chance to give us a statement through official channels that has had a bit more time to mature. If they stick to the original statements, we can still be mad at them.

Like many others, I am extremely disappointed in the developments of the last few days. I bought one of the very first Framework laptops that was sold (early enough that when my unit arrived with a dead display, @nrp was the person doing the troubleshooting via email). I was literally on the verge of purchasing a new Framework 12 for my son and a 13 for my wife, just waiting for them to okay the specs I chose. But after the response yesterday, I will be looking elsewhere.

It’s a shame, I love the ethos and idea of Framework and its support of many great causes like right-to-repair. My Framework 13 is the best laptop I’ve ever owned. But a great laptop is not worth financially supporting a company that supports projects whose primary maintainers have advocated for the stripping of rights of others.

But by not denouncing the people running these projects, you are tacitly saying what they are doing is okay. And by financially supporting them, you are saying you actively support their views.

I really hope you will reconsider your position.

I agree with you.

I got myself a Framework 16 (batch 12 I think?) and really like it. But with framework investing in people that foster toxic communities and support fascism in one way or another, I won’t anymore.

I really really want to like what framework is doing, but this kills all my excitement for Framework as a whole.

Edit: Theres some discussion over at reddit too. I just want to share some things that really resonated with me

”No, we cannot agree to disagree on matters of personhood, human rights, and general decency. You cannot have a “big tent” which includes both abusers and their victims, when you let the former in you are inherently pushing the latter out.”

”Y’all know why for some people everything is political? Because everything IS political. Was it ok for German automakers to support the 30s German government? Is it ok for US weapon manufacturers to sell to Israel? After all they were (are) doing what they do, right? Business will always pretend it’s just business but it’s not.”

”Buying a Framework was a political move and supporting them is also a political stand. If they don’t take their distance with fascists very quickly, I’ll be forever done with them.”

Given the recent financial support of hyprland and omarchy, I don’t think I can continue to purchase or recommend framework products.

I have been an avid supporter of framework. I have a batch 2 framework 13 11th gen intel model, and I purchased two batch 1 framework laptop 16s (one 7940 and one 7840). I have followed frameworks announcements with great interest, and although I already have multiple working framework laptops that suit my needs, I was still tempted by the 12 (although I managed to hold off). I even keep the framework community open as a persistent tab on my phone and check out new posts every few days.

But I’m done. Unless framework decides to stop sponsoring DHH and the like, I don’t think I’ll be coming back.

If support wants my order numbers as proof of my purchases I can send them an email, but they’re tied to this account anyway so they can probably find them.

Thank you for speaking out!
Same here. Until now I was more of a lurker in this community forum, since I cannot contribute with technical stuff here.

But:
Everything is political.

Open source software is political. Repairable hardware is political. And this is exactly why I bought a Framework 16.

Choosing to fund developers that are at the least to say far right adjacent is very political. There is no “apolitical” tech, I fear.

I don’t know how many times I’ll have to correct this, but they are not financially supporting Omarchy.

Only Hyprland.

Your “big tent” has, by virtue of your actions, become a nazi tent. if you like that, continue on your actions.

I would wonder, as a thought experiment, if say, hitler, wrote really good open source code, would you support hitler?

and yes, I have a framework. I am sending this, from my framework.

Ah, thank you. Then the omarchy business is something else

I’m generally against opening multiple forum topics on a subject, especially when there’s a “like” feature…

But thank you for speaking up! We need more people doing the right thing.

Edit: Excellent quotes Numerfolt, thank you!

The Omarchy thing is just because a few of the people at framework use it as their desktop, and thus occasionally post interesting things about it to social media.

Just to be clear, they are only financially supporting Hyprland, and have made no payments at all to Omarchy or DHH.

That would be because it’s against the community guidelines…

The Issue is that the threads get closed constantly…
Maybe an automatic feature:
“This topic is temporarily closed for at least 4 hours due to a large number of community flags.”, but that does not help at the moment.

Perhaps because people are prone to knee jerk reactions and auto locking the threads for a pre defined and communicated period of time is designed to provide a “cooling-off” period.

A feature which is promptly circumvented when users create new threads on the same topic and further perpetuate the spiral! Those threads are auto locked for community guideline violations, reported by other forum users, so it isn’t like Framework is snuffing discussion out.

Why would anybody report these threads?

Agreed on all counts. I’ve been using a Framework laptop since 2022. I love it and have raved about it to anyone who will listen for three years. Recently I’ve encountered some wear and tear that’s difficult to fix just by replacing parts, and I was just a few days ago considering upgrading to a newer Framework 13.

Then I learned about Framework financially supporting Hyprland and promoting Omarchy. I will not be purchasing anything else from Framework, or recommending its products to anyone, unless and until that changes. I hope that Framework reconsiders its position and withdraws support from projects run by right-wing fascists.

Not reporting the threads, but individual posts in the threads, and there were definitely a lot that were going overboard and getting reported in the threads. Some of the posts were pretty crazy.

Read the threads, it’s pretty self evident. Insults and the like

Honestly, I suspect DHH’s companies have purchased so many computers from Framework that none of the money of anyone other than DHH is actually going to the Hyprland support.
