Manjaro install and then an update gets you a grub rescue prompt. Do the same on an old Thinkpad and it just works.

After updating my existing Manjaro installation I was welcomed with a Grub rescue prompt.
I was able to mount the encrypted partition and rescue the data that was not yet backed up.
I did not bother repairing the Grub boot loader but went for a fresh install. After installation, I did pamac update That installed a lot. After reboot I was immediately greeted with the grub rescue prompt again. I did NOT install any source packages or other packages other than doing the updates from the official Manjaro repositories. I had no issues with my Thinkpad. The only difference is the full disk encryption on the Framework laptop which I do not have on the Thinkpad.

You probably installed it with /boot inside your encrypted volume, which is probably needed before decrypting your drive. Really depends on which version of LUKS you used and/or how you decided to build out your partitions. Hard to tell without further details, but you should be asking this in the Manjaro community.

That does not seem to be the problem. It is a Manjaro update issue. Might be Framework specific.

I used the automatic install from Manjaro. Automatic partitioning and ticked the encryption box as I did a year ago.

The install and boot just work fine. Only after running the updates it refuses to boot via grub.

It does boot using the boot manager from the Framework “Bios”. But, the KDE startbar is missing. I can get a shell via for Dolphin and via the menu of Dolphin. No further updates were available. Fixed network also stopped working.

I tried CachyOS but their latest installer freezes on typing the WiFi password.

I upgraded to the latest bios and firmware. After a fresh install Manjaro is still on linux 6.12. I upgraded to kernel 6.18, including headers. It still boots in Grub rescue. Also removing Linux 6.12 does not help. I can boot it via de boot menu in the bios but the KDE start menu is still gone.
Moving Manjaro from stable to testing branch did not help.

That is a strange problem. Do you have multiple drives installed? Maybe grub was installed on a different drive? Sorry I don’t have any other thoughts. Maybe you have multiple grub installations and it’s defaulting to one of your older installs?

Check your uefi boot orders. I usually remove everything else I don’t use from the list.

Been there done that. Maybe I will check Manjaro next year again. A Fresh CachyOS was available around 17:00 CET. I am using that now instead. That one has trouble with the 2.5 Gb USB ethernet card by framework. Installed everything with an USB hub with 1Gb Ethernet and then switched to WiFi for normal use. At least I can get some work done again. Checking Bluethooth and HDMI is next on the list.

Thanks for the help sofar.
