FW 16 does not boot

FW 16, no GPU, simple model. It is runnig Void linux. Have been working just fine for about 1.5 years.

I repeat, the laptop worked perfectly. But it hasn’t been updated for a while.

Boot into console mode (no X11), as root, full update. Everything works without a hitch. Done it many times before.

Log out as root, log back in as user, startx, which, again has worked without a hitch.

Black screen, not pointer, nothing. The machine does not react to anything, Ctrl-Alt-Fn does not drop to console mode. OK, maybe the update ruined some configs.

Power off, by pressing the power button for about 9-10 seconds.

Power on. Power light around the button comes on. Charger LED does not flash at all. No sound, no nothing. Display backlight is off. Left it like that for an hour. The machine is decently warm, so it is doing something, but it reacts to nothing, keyboard backlight is off, display black, the laptop is dead as a dodo.

I wonder if there is some way to get at least into the BIOS? Even though I don’t think that an update would touch the BIOS. But I’d like to have a state where I have at least some communication with the hardware? I’d be really surprised if a system upgrade could brick a laptop.

From power off,

  1. power on with the power button.
  2. look at the leds next to where you plug in the power adapter.
  3. after some time, from 10 to 180 second, it should output some flashes.
The flashes are decoded with this.
If they are too fast, video them, and post a link here.
Framework Laptop 16 Blink Code Diagnostic

Thanks. Machine turning on, power button light comes alive.. After about 50 seconds the LED beside the power connector (power unplugged) blinks a red, 12 greens, an orange then BBGBGBGG. So, according to the table, everything is fine with the machine. Which is not surprising, considering that before the system update it was working perfectly. But then it does not do anything at all.

The above flash pattern comes on only once. Then the LED is dark, the screen is dark, the keyboard is dark, only the power button light is on. Nothing is happening, except the machine slowly getting warmer. The familiar Framework screen never gets on, no boot error message, absolutely nothing.

Even if the system update somehow damaged the GRUB boot code, before loading that, the machine should offer me a way to intervene and select an alternate boot source. But nothing. Just a completely black screen and no sign of life, bar the warm air after a while.

Are you able to get into BIOS (pressing F2 and/or F12 keys during boot)? Do you get output on an external monitor?

From here: Framework Laptop port80 codes · GitHub the code is try to boot system to OS.

Maybe pull the nvme drive(s) and see if you can boot from a live usb.

It is worth raising a support ticket with FW via their support web page.

The FW16 AMD is unable to display anything on the screen if the RAM is not working.
Try removing the RAM chips and insert just one of them at a time, in each slot, to see if you can:

  1. Get any life out of the laptop, so it displays something.
  2. Find out which RAM chip is maybe bad.

The 12 green blinks indicate nothing obviously wrong.
Also note, a bad M.2 card (SSD, Wifi) can cause it to fail to boot, so it is often a good idea to remove those while testing.
The battery might also be a possible cause, but I am not sure whether the FW16 can boot without a battery.
