Tracking says my FW12 will arrive on Friday. I already lightened my work schedule so I’ll get an hour or so to play with the new toy. <3

Arrived Thursday morning (grey i5) in Greater Chicago.
First impressions:

  • Feels sturdier than the reviews have made it out to be with it being “flimsy”
  • Touchpad is slightly uneven, or maybe it’s just my OCD. What I mean by that is that the right click area is slightly more “depressed” than the left click area. This makes it feel a bit squishier of a click than the left click.
  • Tablet function with Lenovo Precision Pen 2 works pretty well once I figured out how to enable pressure sensitivity in Krita, though palm rejection seems a bit weak. Could just be my unfamiliarity with styluses/art programs in general as it’s my first time using them.
EDIT: In Krita on Windows 11, I set the following for optimal experience:
Settings > Configure Krita > Tablet > Windows 8+ Pointer Input (Windows Ink)
Settings > Configure Krita > General > Tools > uncheck Enable touch painting
    Restart Krita
This seems to have fixed the palm accidentally drawing, while also fixing pressure-sensitive strokes.
  • Tested a few light games with decent framerates (maintain your expectations being non-dual channel intel igpu)… i.e. Portal 2/Source Engine games, Gauntlet, Running with Rifles (OpenGL with most detail settings turned to low/off), Golf With Your Friends, Rocket League, Dota 2….
  • Rear Bottom can get pretty hot/uncomfortable during CPU intensive load even with fan on full blast

Other than that, all seems well so far. :slightly_smiling_face:

Could you have a look at the chassis, is there are any signs of cracks, as discussed in one other thread?

No visible signs of cracking or deformation on outside of the chassis as reported in “FW12 cracking issue”. I did remove the keyboard to see what’s going on, and it seems like the keyboard/trackpad being such a thin plastic, it tends to bend in the direction it’s being held, which presumably is conforming to any slight inconsistency in the molding or the way the screws are gripping.

Ours arrived yesterday! We got 4 i3’s with 16 gigs of RAM — one for each of our four kids — and set them all up running Bazzite.

Overall really satisfied with the build, power, and performance. These are not flimsy by any means, unless you’ve only been exposed to the architectural slab feel of a Macbook as your daily driver. The LCD bleed some folk have complained about isn’t a problem either, as it only shows up when you’re re-adjusting the angle of the hinge and it goes away immediately.

And even despite them being i3s, they’re able to run all of their games no problem, so long as the heavier hitters are not on ultra settings. And because my youngest son insisted, I can confirm that it CAN run Baldur’s Gate III, albeit a 30fps cap on lowest settings. But it’s (at least to them) playable. Despite the load it never gets hotter than 75°C and the fan is quiet. I’m beginning to think a lot of the gaming problems are a Windows thing.

Two issues that I might need to send up the chain in a bit as these might be QC issues:

  1. Trackpads are good but have been a little inconsistent. One of them isn’t seated properly (similar to @mattjb1222) so it clicks funny. I’m going to try and fix it one more time more carefully by centering it with shims before I tighten the screws. Also, the two-finger right-click is inconsistent on all four of them and can be finicky. (Not sure if that’s software.)

  2. One of the panels — sometimes — has a visible refresh, almost a flickering. But it comes and goes (only happened twice so far). I’m going to do a full diagnostic over the next few days to see if it’s software (unlikely as they’re all configured the same) or if it’s just a bad connection.

Next stop: LAN Party.

My FW12 came today as well. It’s been appropriately sticker bombed.

First Impressions

The FW12 went together so easily that I expect to have no trouble talking small kids through it in the future. It feels very tough for as small as it is. I’m really pleased that the bumpers aren’t sticky or squidgy as I’d feared they might be.

I threw Fedora on here to start with, just so I can see how the touchscreen and stylus input are with a set-up that’s made for them. They perform flawlessly. Fedora is annoying me less than I expected, but I’m still unsure whether I’ll keep it long term.

The screen is lovely. The keyboard is more usable than I expected at this laptop’s small size. The performance is more than adequate for the web browsing, writing, light gaming, and such that I’ll do on it. My only disappointment was battery life. I could be running a much lighter distro, but still, it’s good enough to get by, not great.

Future Plans

I plan to keep putting this little guy through his paces. I hope that it’ll hold up as a toy, travel companion, and tablet replacement for me. If so, my mom’s next computer will be a FW12; she struggles switching between her tablet and laptop so a 2-in-1 may be just the ticket. I may also look at FW12s for some of the kids in my life.

I hope the rest of you are all as happy as I am!

Hey @Steve_Caruso - I ended up realigning my trackpad by removing the keyboard, and carefully giving a 1/3 turn loosening of each of the screws on the backside of the trackpad, then shifting the trackpad over a tiny bit, looking through the trackpad into a light to compare and ensure it’s even, and then retightening the screws. It now looks more even and feels more consistent, and right clicks no longer feel like they’re rubbing against the side. :slightly_smiling_face:

Who I am:

Dunno yet, I guess I’ll have to figure that out. Keywords are: artist, traveller by train/bicycle, hoarder.

What I ordered:

  • System: Intel® Core™ - i5-1334U
    Color: Bubblegum

  • Keyboard: Swedish/Finnish - Gray

  • Power Adapter: Power Adapter - 60W - EU

  • Framework Screwdriver

  • Expansion Cards:

    • USB-A

    • SD Card

    • USB-C

    • 2 x HDMI

Why this?

Been going with old macs from the trash since mid 00. First time buying new computer since the ones I found nowadays won’t repair. Upgrading from MacBook Pro ~2015 but still use my iBook G4 from time to time.

Buying framework is a statement for repairability. Also been going for Fairphone 1-3 (the last one going kinda obsolete with 2G & 3G being turned off in Sweden later this year).

I will test this piece with both Windows 11 (Never used windows since XP, got a MCP in XP LOL) and curious what to find. Also will run VM or double boot on Linux, I guess ubuntu. Mostly for cli. Been using Slackware since the 90’s for servers and I will also miss MacOS cli.

Mine is still ‘shipping soon’…

My package has gone from Taiwan to Japan to Hawaii to Tennessee to Japan again so I have no idea when I will get it.

Sorry, but could not hold back a chuckle. At this point it’s well traveled. A real globetrotter. Congrats I guess?
