I just got the tracking number!
Waiting for fedex to release my order from their storage at the airport (se separate thread¹) and then biking there picking it up. Ordered 2TB drive and 48GB ram hoping it will not be too hot. Thinking of running omarchy², tested it in vm on my old MB Pro and it seemed neat.
Got my package. I had the black built self one because I am lazy and don’t like assembling things. Also I didn’t want to install Windows myself and had them do it. Even though there are so many updates anyway it is annoying.
First impressions. It is boxy and rigid. Very Rigid. My only other Framework was the OG 13 and that had more flex than this. Size wise, I am a fan, been liking smaller Pcs anyway and this one feels more portable.
My first issue is the new locking mechanism for the ports. Red meaning safe to remove seems backwards and I hurt myself trying to take one out.
Will have more to say when the updates finish since it is still only 6% done.
It arrived! Initial impressions are good, but this thing is a fingerprint magnet. If I deploy this model more widely, I’ll need to actually break out the white gloves for my white glove pre-provisioning…
I’ll carry it for a few days, then wipe it and hand it off to the person who needs it.
This is the way the FW 16 works. Both the input deck locks and the expansion card locks are red when unlocked.
The part that confused me was that my FW 12 arrived with the expansion card locks in the locked position…
Yeah they were in the locked position for me as well.
As for fingerprint magnet, it is matte which helps, besides the screen that is. I have a glossy Asus laptop and THAT thing is impossible to keep your prints off of.
More updates from me.
I like the fact that the screen rotates in tablet mode.
Trackpad feels better than the OG framework 13, very smooth, slippery even.
Tablet mode makes the hot air shoot out from the hinge area. Can get real hot and noisy. A bit annoying.
Mine at 100% battery at default brightness had an estimate of 3 hours. That is BAD. I keep mine at minimum brightness so I will see how that adjusts but yeesh. And I am using the i3 which should be way less power hungry.
The 12 by 10 aspect ratio actually makes it a bigger laptop than my Asus 11.6 inch. It is also almost twice as thick. But it doesn’t feel that much heavier so, props.
I am bummed about not having a backlit keyboard.
Despite it being an i3, it feels snappy. Newer CPUs are really amazing. I did the “4 youtube videos at once” test no problem.
What I am annoyed by are the Windows 11 updates. They take so long and just won’t stop. Can’t blame Framework for that but I still hate it.
What I am more concerned about is that the 2nd time I turned it on there was a “USB not recognized”. All I had was my ports plugged in, so I took them out and put them back in. That was weird.
TBH if I knew FedEx was delivering to Sweden I would have not ordered the laptop anymore. Spending one vacation day hoping that they would actually attempt delivery and another vacation day to go to their office that is hours away is not worth it.
