Going to get a Framework 16 - have a question

  1. How are the order times right now?
  2. I saw that early batches had some minor mechanical fitment issues. I assume these have been corrected by now?

Mine is on the way. I’ll let you know about the fitment issues.
I ordered 10/4 and I should have it by 10/14 (USA)

Thank you AdenTD

Most of the fitment issues can be corrected by simply straightening out the plates on a flat surface.

I do not know if they have been corrected through. If you do experience fitment issues, you can always contact support for some replacement spacers.

I received my 16 I believe sometime back in june-july of this year. I had a touchpad spacer that was out of spec, but support sent me a new one free of charge. The support exchange lasted about 2ish days. Didn’t have to send the old one back.

The laptop other than that initial hiccup is good on fitment, and has been working great.

Hi.
There are some USB device compatibility issues with the FW16.
Some PSUs don’t work with it so make sure you get the FW16 psu brick.
Some USB devices don’t work, e.g. there is some mention that a particular iPhone does not work with it to transfer pictures.
So, it will probably be worth reading on this forum to find out more before you buy.
I am hoping a future BIOS update will fix the USB compatability problems, but FW are not promising anything.

I have a feeling that the issue with the bricks is because the FW 16 draws a LOT of current. I may be able to offer insight into this after I get it. I might be able to help with USB issues too

Things you should know before ordering.

The Good

  • Good display
  • Awesome and quirky features (configurable keyboard deck, swappable GPU, expansion cards, etc)
  • Decent hardware
  • Very repairable

The Bad

  • Fit and finish issues
  • Fan noise (not personally bothered, but some people are)
  • Slow and feature lacking BIOS updates
  • Unclear future (as of 16OCT 2024)

The Rub
A lot of us bought this laptop on the unguaranteed promise that it can and will get better with an unpublished road map of expandability and upgradeability. This laptop is good, but if it were a pastry, it would be a little gooey in the middle. If you’re not willing to eat around those parts (so to speak), this laptop probably isn’t for you.
I really like my Framework 16, but my expectations were tempered from the start. So go ahead and buy the laptop. But just know that it’s not going to be a MacBook or a Razer and there is a chance that it may not progress beyond it’s current state (although I think it will).
