How long before Dbrand skins?

It’s still a dumb idea.

You wouldn’t stick a skin on the antennas of your WiFi router.

My obsidian has been shipped. Now I can lay the top piece on a box and pretend I have a 16 :joy:

I ordered mine the day they were released but because I had sent a request to customer service for adding something to my order, Ive been stuck waiting for a reply for almost a week now :frowning: I’m fine waiting even though Im a Batch 1 since I dont even have the laptop yet lol

It wouldn’t matter, even if I did.
In fact, I already ordered my skin elsewhere and am gonna apply it, without cutting out the antennas. I’ll measure the WiFi-signal before and after installation, then we’ll see.
I bet there’s not gonna be any change.

I think the wifi cutout is by far the smallest problem. That might make sense, maybe not.
But the overall lack of customization and flexibility at a high price is what annoys me.

It’s yours to do with as you wish. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Prioritising the appearance of stick on tat over WiFi performance is baffling. To me at least.

If that’s all it takes to reduce the WiFi performance, that’d be indeed concerning… from a technical point of view.

i liked their obsidian skin for fw13. i ordered the obsidian skins. eagerly waiting for delivery.

I don’t think it’s a matter or prioritization as much as the amount being so neglible that it’s not measurable. If that’s true or even if it’s small, the difference may not be noticeable until you are using a weak enough signal that you are already battling issues caused by signal strength.

It’s a common practice to ignore (relatively) small/insignificant values in engineering and physics (even though they have a very real effect) simply because its not noticeable in normal situations.

My Dbrand skin arrived today, looks pretty good. Its only a shame that Mr. Rig x-ray’d one with a pesky numeric keypad.

Yeah, Dbrand basically said they are not going to offer extra expansion card skins that you can purchase. And you don’t have a diy option.

There’s a limit to what’s practical, and profitable.

fr I bought the top cover sticker but refuse to buy the premium kit unless they give customization options or the option to buy certain parts separately. Otherwise, that’s literally so pointless to have no option to buy expansion modules stickers when one of the best features is being able to swap them out :skull:

that’s true. I guess it just tastes extra bitter, when we used to have such great flexibility with their skins and then they took it away.

Also I have absolutely no idea of the logistics of a skin warehouse, but it just seems to me, that when grabbing some bags out of bins it doesn’t really matter if the skins in those bags all have the same colour scheme. Because surely they don’t cut-to-order. They must have hundreds of each device and colour variant lying around

I get your point, however the reality is the cost to process an order is fixed. It’s the same for postage stamp sized expansion module skin as for the 16" laptop.

They may well keep some stock of popular items, I’d expect the X-Ray skins to be printed/cut to order.

The modular laptop concept doesn’t fit Dbrand’s business model at the moment. Pick’n’Mix selections are likely uneconomic due to being labour intensive, and requiring a bunch of custom website programming.

To sum it up: dbrand is expensive and inflexible and should be avoided, if you want a skin tailored for your Framework Laptop 16. You can get enough raw skin to cover two of them, if you tailor it by yourself, for as little as $9.

Yeah, that’s such a shame. They refuse to sell expansion card skins separately… I suppose you could cut out 4 (?) squares out of the touchpad skin part yourself if you don’t plan using it.
Anyone knows any alternative to dbrand?

How is that labour intensive? DBrand is entierly run by robots. :upside_down_face:

Took far longer for someone to say that than I expected.
