Hi all,
Last Christmas I got a Framework Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840HS) with graphics module (AMD Radeon™ RX 7700S)
My home setup is somewhat uncommon; I have two HP Dock G5 docking stations connected to two laptops, both docking stations connecting to a set of 3 monitors. Both laptops share the same keyboard/mouse/clipboard with Symless Synergy software. A two-channel audio mixer takes care of the audio of both laptops, making it even more symless to work on two machines.
This works quite well and is a very nice setup in my humble opinion. I’ve included a picture below.
Now, having this setup, I could test the limits of the Framework laptop with the docking station as well!
I had some interesting findings though;
- If I connect the same dock to one of the USB 4 ports (as stated on Expansion Card Slot functionality on Framework Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series)), it works perfectly fine and all 3 screens become available, and all connected USB devices are properly “hubbed”.
- If I connect the HP Dock G5 to the USB-C port on the back of the Graphics Module, it works as USB hub, but no displays are connected. I would have expected, since the USB-C port is a dedicated display port, this should work.
- When I connect two docking stations, one to each USB 4 port, I get a black screen of death (used to be blue, I prefer this dark mode
) On my HP laptop two docks works but Windows only supports up to 4 active displays. (but no crash!)
I wanted to document this as compatibility issue, but I’m also wondering if 2 and/or 3 could be resolved in any way?
This is the actual setup ![]()
