Ignoring power settings and screen flashing after driver update

I am using the most recent Windows 11. I updated my drivers last night using the packages available on the framework website. The problem began this morning.

I have the laptop configured so that it turns off the screen after 30 minutes and never sleeps when it is plugged in, and 3 minutes for both when on battery.

The laptop is plugged in. After 3 minutes, it’s going to the login screen where the display turns off and then a few seconds later it turns on, and it keeps turning on and off. It’s incredibly annoying since the laptop sits on my desk next to me and each time it flashes it’s a visual distraction.

I also noticed a change in how the charging has been working. The smart charger has been maintaining my battery at 85%. Since the update, the battery is now charged to 100%. Smart charging is still on, but the power screen shows that it’s charging. I’m also seeing the brightness fluctuate as I use the laptop. I only use the laptop while it’s plugged in so it’s crucial that smart charging be functioning correctly.

Edit: Another issue happening is my speakers are now crackling while playing Youtube videos.

Update: I changed the “on battery” settings from 3 minutes to match the plugged-in settings, and that resolved the laptop turning off the screen prematurely. It makes me think that the driver update is causing the laptop to report the battery status to Windows 11 incorrectly, which could also be why the smart charging isn’t working correctly. So far it seems like smart charging works properly while the laptop is open, but when it goes into sleep mode it charges to 100%.

Edit: After 30 minutes, it did return to the login screen where the flashing happened. The screen would turn off for a few seconds, then turn on for a few seconds, and repeating like that. The pattern seemed pretty random. I also put my mouse upside-down to confirm that it wasn’t being triggered by desk vibrations.

Update #2: I unplugged my laptop for about 20 seconds and plugged it back in, then did a shutdown and turned it back on. It looks like this has resolved the main issues. The screen is no longer flashing at the login screen. One change is that smart-charge is now maintaining 60% instead of 80%, but it did look like it was holding that charge steady overnight.

Another avenue to try is just disable the smart charge feature in the BIOS and force the laptop to only charge to 75% (or whatever number is preferred). Being as it lives most of its life plugged in this will endure the battery is never overly charged.

Glad to hear the issue is resolved.
