Intermittent Lines over icons in the taskbar

Hello, I have had my DIY framework for a few weeks now, and have pretty much transitioned to using it as my daily driver. I just wish there was a way to get Apple Messages on a Windows PC.

I noticed that horizontal lines show up, intermittently, on the taskbar of the laptop. I have it hooked up to a monitor, using USB C through a dock, and the lines don’t show up on there. I took a screenshot to try to show what they are like, but they don’t show up on the screenshot either.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what is going on?

Windows 10, 16Gb Crucial RAM, WD Black SN770 SSD

Hi and welcome to the forum

The lines only appear on the apps you are using. I would try changing the size of the taskbar to see if that kicks anything.

What resolution and magnfication are you using maybe you have some oddness there.

I use nominal resolution 175 mag and medium taskbar

Thanks for the advice, and the welcome!

I’ll give that a try when I get home. If I remember correctly I have it set at normal resolution and 150 magnification. Hopefully that is causing it.

Not to raise your hopes  I had it at 150 without that issue but it’s worth trying a few changes.

Try changing the taskbar size to if you like.

Will provide instructions for the later

OH! you are using Win 10 you can change the taskbar manually, on Win11 there is no user option to change the task bar or it’s position etc.

So with Win 10 can you move the taskbar to the top or the sides to see if the issue persits?

If you look closely, you can see that the lines appear over inactive applications as well.

You might try re-seating the display cable.

If you boot into firmware settings (press F2 a few times before/during boot while the Framework logo is displayed), do you see the intermittent lines at the bottom of the screen there as well? If so, it is certainly not an operating system or driver issue.

OK I have poor eyesight. But as the line is blue my suspicion is that it is a Windows explorer issue missplacing maybe a ‘shadow’ of the ‘active’ indicator.

Check FS integrity, RAM and intel display driver. The icon composition isn’t rendering right.

Hi @Philip_Chater,

I would recommend submitting a ticket to our support team here: Framework | Support so they can ensure your laptop is performing as intended!

Thank you and stay safe!

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I checked on the BIOS page, and the lines still appear there. I had a look at, what I think is, the display cable and everything seemed OK there. I have submitted a support ticket. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it.

The laptop still works fine, but it is a bit annoying now, and I can’t help seeing it.

I have the exact same problem for my DIY i5 11th gen and contacted also the Framework support.

I made a video with my smartphone, which you can find here: filehosting.at | Download | VID_20220602_212729.mp4

In the meantime I upgraded to Windows 11. The line is still existing, but way less annoying.

I guess it’s a hardware thing, because it’s the same under Linux and also in RDP-sessions and is not shown in screenshots/screencasts.
