Intermittent windows "Device connected" sound

Windows 11, Framework 13 AMD

Basically, you know the little bing-bing sound that Windows makes when you attach or detach a USB device? My computer makes that sound often when I have not plugged in or unplugged anything, which makes me suspect it’s disconnecting or reconnecting from one of the expansion cards or something?

It does not give me an accompanying banner notification, the way that it would if I had plugged in a flashdrive.

Sometimes it’s the disconnect sound, sometimes it’s the connected sound.

I’m on the latest BIOS and drivers from the framework website, as of a couple days ago.

My expansion cards are:

  • Slot 1: HDMI
  • Slot 2: USB C
  • Slot 3: 1 TB storage expansion
  • Slot 4: USB A

Because this is an intermittent issue, I’m not sure how to troubleshoot it. Is there a way to pull up some kind of log of “recent device events” in Windows so I can see what it thinks it connected to?

Go through “device manager” and see what device is being “connected” and disconnected. View > Device By Connection might help.

I have feeling it’s HDMI, but I am just guessing.

USB is probably under Computer > ACPI x64 based PC > ACPI-Compliant System > PCI Express Root Complex > PCI Express Root Port. One of those root ports.

Interesting. I have no idea this is even still a thing.

And now, you can’t change these settings through GUI, because Windows!

Fortunately you can just run these

No, this will not screw up your computer. Or insert a virus. This sets system cooling policy to “active” when on battery, turn off USB selected suspend on Battery and on AC, and turns off PCIe link state power management on Battery and AC.

I have a feeling that disabling PCIe link power will cause my SSDs to go to 10,000 degrees and melt through chassis, and also murder battery life in the process.
