Is there going to be a new GPU for framework soon?

Framework doesn’t have publicly available roadmaps. They typically announce things when they are already largely in production.

Will say, I started with just the base 16, no dGPU but I am waiting for a more powerful GPU to be able to replace my desktop, going to need to be on the move more often.

I wish they could announce strix halo with 8060s, so people like me who is a college student don’t need have a 2.4 kilo laptop in the bag or swap it frequently.

I absolutely agree with Lucas. No one can say if or when a new GPU will come out. With that said, Framework has started that they have a big announcement coming this year, and the GPU vendors are launching next gen laptop GPUs this year. “Coincidence? I THINK NOT!” (Edna Mode from The Incredibles). But yeah, it absolutely could be a coincidence. Personally, I’m hoping for next gen GPUs this year.

Yes but It released with a underpowered GPU even at the time. In addition to that as Jeff_the_man said the next gen GPUS are coming out and that only happens every 2ish years! (and I am not paying full price for a 8gb GPU at the moment)

After GPUS release it will take time for them to develop, test, and validate a board to work on these systems. If their CPU release cycle is anything to go by, they have about a year lead time after tech gets released to put it in their design. Could be happily surprised though.

What is your use case that this is underpowered? Gaming? What games?

I thought it would be underpowered as well - but since I have had mine (batch 5) There hasn’t been a game that I would play that wont run on this laptop.

I can’t play on ultra everything… but hell, for 1080p or 2k (main screen) gaming… I am getting 45-90 fps on most titles with high settings.

I would argue that this card isnt “underpowered” but rather, firmly in the “mid-tier” range.

I largely agree though FF16 runs only ok-ish on 1080 with med settings. I suspect that’s largely because it wants ~9.5GB of vram and only has 8GB and so ends up using the system RAM a bit. Other than that title, I agree it’s pretty solid.

Yeah it’s mid tear range but for a high price! I am hoping for high range card! Or the next gen mid tear range + more vram!

I hope they will soon relase a model with the latest Ryzen AI processors (with replaceable memory of course).

Theoretically yes, but what that would require the OEMS to be providing them early access to designs and hardware. I don’t think they have this relationship with most of them yet as Framework is still a small company going by marketshare. Additionally I would posit that it would take them more time to develop an appropriate solution as they are trying to make these gpus fit into their own ecosystem, which they have only done for 1 other gpu. They don’t have a long history of doing these such that they would have a wealth of experience from to expedite the process. This will develop over time and shouldn’t be expected for such young business.

Again, I could be delightfully proved wrong on this. I just believe you should temper your hopes a little on this one.

Thank you for the thoughtful response! I am hoping that they update it but I understand It would make sense for them to be focusing on other things, but making even more compelling offers would be great!
