A decently priced Intel gpu with a good chunk of ram for non gaming workloads would be excellent. I’d buy that right away.
I dont think they have created a mobile version of their GPUs yet?
I would love to use the m2 bay to build an intel eGPU, but sadly the intel GPUs dont play well with Linux… yet.
IDK if Framework talked about that. But Linus did. NVIDIA (and AMD) can veto any layout of the board they don’t like. And from what he said, indirectly, it seems that NVIDIA said “absolutely no” to form factor like in FW16.
So it seems we’re mostly stuck with AMD (Intel has very high power for what it does. Especially idle). I would have bought the GPU if 7700S was actually equivalent to 7700XT (12 GB VRAM). Even if it was powered in a way that was optimized for efficiency.
9070’s coming in March, 9060’s a bit later. I don’t remember what’s the limit of GPU power use in FW16… 160W? So we might get a card (with hopefully more than 8GB of VRAM) that is most efficient around that power. And you don’t need to underclock significantly to get lower power.
Any speculation on why that might happen?
The only thing I can hallucinate is that it voilates their pricing policies by having a device laying somewhere in between laptop and discrete desktop GPUs. But hey, there are eGPUs
I mean, technically it’s laptop GPU, but it is user servicable and detachable, hence desktop GPU, so it must conform the specs for desktops but probably there aren’t any in such power segment.
Or it could be that pricing for OEMs is vastly different depending on the type of device… and the companies do not agree on how to treat the FW16 module
Anyways, that’s a bit disappointing, no matter what the real cause is, which we’d probably never know, because NVIDIA.
NVidia does have a reputation for being very picky about how their GPUs are used. It’s why overclocking them is more restricted than AMD GPUs and part of the reason EVGA exited the GPU business.
Unfortunately AMD is rumored to be focusing on desktop for their next gen and may not even make mobile ones.
As for power budgets the FW16 only has a 180W USB-C adapter and I don’t know who offers a more powerful one so even if the hardware can handle it you’ll be draining the battery if you use a powerful GPU. I’ve actually noticed this happening from time to time with the 7700S.
I think you are talking about intel they are not doing mobile gpus!
I wish:
Oh my… I hope.
A full 240W USB PD power adapter is now available. Just search forum for 240w.
I haven’t seen anyone mention it, but you currently cannot buy the GPU by itself. I’ve tried for a couple of weeks and it says there is no stock in the US warehouse. I may be over speculating, but I would guess that might be an indication that another GPU could be on the way.
Oooh! ^w^
Not to spoil the party, but here in Italy I am able to buy a dGPU 7700S module… Sorry…
That will be because the European warehouse has stock, but the US warehouse is out of stock.
Haven’t done my research but are FW16 GPU just a rego mobile version of AMD’s GPU? I thought it was somehow custom build to fit FW16, funky form factor or some such. As in not done by framework but by OEMs themselves. I’d imagine just coordinating something like that would be a pain for any company, especially so for framework as fyi they are pretty small all in all.
I’m now a bit conflicted… The marketplace got more GPUs. I’m sad they aren’t a new version. I’m happy I’m getting a GPU.
I don’t think we are going to have a new GPU. There are many problems that are far from being resolved.
However, it has been a great step. I believe that the standard at a modular level will be established by Intel, which has already drawn up a road map in that sense.
We also don’t know if sales of framework 16 have been good.
And another problem is costs. Framework is modular, but if you charge more money to buy a motherboard and a GPU than a new laptop, your business is not profitable.
At least it has helped Intel propose a modular standard model.
If Framework intends to continue selling the 16, I don’t see how Framework can’t refresh the 16. The hardware in the 16 is still relevant, but aging, no laptop with “upgradable” graphics has ever pulled off the upgrade part of the process, and with RDNA4 on the horizon with plenty of hype, there hasn’t been a better time. Intel’s announcement only adds to the pressure.
I fully expect Framework to announce a refresh this summer and for new hardware to ship no earlier than this fall. If AMD is still as excited about the prospect of an upgradable laptop now as they were almost 2 years ago, they’re probably planning something.
Damn, vidicated. This has to be new FW16 iteration, meaning new GPU, surely?
Suspicious…
Nvidia confirms RTX 50-series laptops will be available for pre-order starting February 25 | Tom’s Hardware
In all honesty, I hope this is just a coincidence. I’ve been daily driving Linux for years now and been attempting to drop Nvidia whenever I can. If FW16 really is a 50-series laptop I think I might just wait until gen3 then.
