I think it’s a pretty obvious idea. But it would be interesting to know why it’s not a thing, from a FW team point of view. )))
Yeah that would be so cool. A nice screen-friendly stylus on one end, and a screen-destroying, scratching, pokey screw driver head on the other end. I would have to keep my eyes open every time I picked it up or I would be tossing a coin to see whether I destroyed my screen this time or not.
Another reason is as this is intended for educational use, it’s not really a great idea to conveniently give kids a tool that they could use to open up or destroy the laptop.
I can see the idea, but a screwdriver is typically a sturdy, slightly heavier built tool than a stylus. Once you make the stylus with the internal electronics and battery, to then put a tough, magnetic holder on the end with a metal bit in it would probably make it a bit heavier than most folks would want a pen/stylus to be. Not to mention, unbalanced, with the weight of the bit on the end.
My question about the stylus would be, is it repairable? I know, it’s “just the stylus” and I suppose I wouldn’t be outraged if it wasn’t repairable. But it has a battery in it, right? Is that at least replaceable? It wouldn’t be the end of the world, but would at least be a slight shame if the stylus was essentially disposable if the battery in it fails.
Firstly, I think this would not be popular enough to be worth the downsides. The FW12 is designed for students and as @TheTRUEAsian pointed out, they don’t need to disassemble their laptop on the regular.
Why add unnecessary bulk and weight to a stylus which you would use exponentially more often than the screwdriver? Most people who like to write and draw want a stylus that’s thin and light. For those people, would you want Framework to sell a separate stylus without the screwdriver?
This is just speculation, but they’re probably reusing the molds for 13 and 16 screwdrivers just with different colors.
From a sustainability and financial standpoint, there’s no reason why Framework would sell multiple designs of the same screwdriver, nor multiple styluses with/without a screwdriver.
Discipline and self-control. Teach them.
Some cultures just can’t have nice things. e.g. Think vending machines in NYC.
Society progression has a certain dependency on cultural and social stability / maturity.
OP is thinking like a stylus / screwdriver combo ‘bit’. One or the other at any one time (e.g. Philips & T5 bit)
Even nrp mentioned that he has a screw driver with him all the time. Might as well make a two in one. Through better thoughtful design, you have less material waste.
Really though, the next ‘evolution’ to repairability is to make it tool-less. If you can have m.2 retention mechanism tool-less (and still maintaining electrical contact), what’s stopping them from making internal completely tool-less? As for the chassis screws, just make them into corner laptop feet / thumbscrew combo. It’s just that Framework doesn’t spend R&D into fasteners.
It seems, that the stylus has an usb-c port. So it should be no problem for someone to develop an usb-c to screw driver bit extension card, that you can use with the stylus or even your framework laptops
This one is superb, thanks! :_)
