Recommended 3rd party styluses?

Since the Framework stylus won’t be released till later, in the meantime, what’s some value-for-money styluses I could use with the Framework 12? I tried to search for MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 compatible styluses but, frustratingly enough, most stores and manufacturers are pretty vague on whether their styluses support the protocols. I also don’t know if MPP 2.0 is supported by Linux, I’ve seen some expensive ones from HP claiming they only support MPP 2.0

Disclaimer: don’t have any experience and only bookmarked the product based on a recommendation in another thread.

Penoval USI 2.0 pen is available on Amazon. Price seems to be mid-tier and should work well.

We’ve tried both the Penoval USI 2.0 and MPP 2.0, and they are both ok. The Microsoft Surface Pen Slim works well, but is a little expensive.

I also was looking into this. My use case is more for art purposes (and a little bit of note-taking). The reviewers were supplied with the Metapen 2. I’ll personally skip that one.

The ones that are decent are Penoval, Microsoft slim pen 2 and Lenovo precision pen 2. I heard great things about the Lenovo precision pen 2. I’ll probably go for that one if Framework stylus is not released by the time my Laptop is shipped (batch 2). I’ll let you guys know if it is any good

The microsoft slim pen 2 seems great but it is the most expensive. You also need to buy a separate charger to charge it (no usb-c)

Any chance the Surface Pen (no clip) was tested? That’s what I have already and plan on using, I’d imagine it would work similar to the Surface Pen Slim but have no idea

I’d go for the Lenovo Precision pen 2 since its way cheaper than the slim pen and has better line quality than most of the other options. (plus 2 buttons!)

The Penoval USI702 has a tail eraser end. Does the FW12 also support tail erasers?

That’s a USI 1.0 device and probably won’t work.

Ok as in “meh” or ok as in “great”? Does the Surface Slim Pen work better?

The Slim pen is currently the best MPP pen available to my knowledge in terms of line quality.

Literally everything else is going to be either ok as in “meh” or kinda bad.

The slim pen has many cons for the line quality though, like a proprietary charging solution and being the opposite of repairable. Not to mention, it’s like $100-$130.

Yeah pen performance is important. What I like about the framework pen is that it has a replaceable battery. I wonder how long other stylus last before the battery is dead. How long did you have your slim pen 2?

The Penoval USI 2.0 is fine. It’s not great for art, but it’s workable.

I just tried flipping into MPP mode in bios, and trying a lenovo precision pen 2 I got off amazon. It’s really nicely built – I like it MUCH more than the penoval as a physical object – but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be recognized at all, at least under Linux. Possibly there’s software/drivers I need? Or there’s some magic button combo to wake it up?

If anybody knows, I’m all ears!

ETA: Using libinput-tools to debug events, apparently holding the buttons for about 30 seconds does wake it up, and the lenovo precision pen 2 stylus with the fw12 in MPP mode is now working! Sorry, probably easily discoverable.

I’ve never owned one, I’ve just seen like every review under the sun for it lol.

I can’t imagine you’d get more than a year and a half out of it before the tiny battery started to loose capacity or fail all together.
