[KDE Plasma] KDE Plasma on Framework Laptop 16" having very weird graphical issues

Glad I found this thread, because it’s exactly what I’ve had on my FW16 w/ dGPU.

Running Bazzite with KDE. I also see this on external displays. Sometimes on the integrated display I get a moment of banded artifact horizontally, about 3cm high that flashes quickly.

I saw this issue within a few days of receiving a new framework 16, but mine didn’t look nearly as bad as the first screenshots in this thread. I basically got random flashes of junk pixel squares, and it devolved into the laptop screen constantly freezing. The CPU itself seemed to be running just fine, since I could see when attaching to an external monitor that only the laptop display was frozen. Moving the mouse on the external monitor worked fine.

Framework support replaced the display, the EDP cable, (both didn’t fix the issue) then finally the main board itself, after which I haven’t seen the problem since. But also, the replacement main board is on bios 3.03 whereas the previous one was bios 3.05, I don’t want to upgrade back for now in case that was a part of the issue. (I didn’t buy the dGPU)

this sounds like one of the issues with the igpu on the 7040 series. much older linux kernels didnt suffer this iirc but its been around for a while now (kernel updates have been gradually making it less and less frequent on fedora at least)

do you know if it happens on x11 (assuming you dont have any software or config that requires wayland to work properly)?

some of the links that have come up during my troubleshooting of my own issues, in case its useful - apologies if any of these have already been posted in this thread:

description of my own issues

for reference, I am on Fedora 41 but have also used Fedora 40 and I remember experiencing the issues there too on some of the kernel-vanilla kernels I installed to get a newer kernel (because of a different issue with amd graphics cards - namely a performance regression that was patched in the newer kernels but wasnt in the kernel versions shipped by fedora 40 at the time) - it might have also occured on some of the later kernel versions shipped with fedora 40 but that was a while ago and ive forgotten exactly when the issue started happening. also ive used swaywm the entire time.

the issues are/were:
occasional bars of pink corruption in gpu-accelerated firefox + occasionally some other applications like vscode, less often konsole, often when scrolling in firefox or switching sway workspaces to one with vscode open that hasnt been rendered for a while - only seems to happen frequently with gray-black backgrounds - also now on sharepoint onenote i get the occasional vertical gray+white bars on most of the screen - also when using 4k 60fps displays off the igpu there is major graphics corruption turning the display into multicoloured static or covering most of it with the same static and translating the remaining visible bits of the image with tiling while static flickers over it (it is somewhat covered at minimum and more gets covered every so often as the image glitches and shifts the offset position), basically being unusable unless i turn the framerate or resolution down

These are the kinds of issues I was seeing. X11 on Fedora performed much better, but ultimately I was able to see the same set of problems, just much less frequently.

@Game_Channel your videos are also what I experienced

I want to reiterate that after the main board swap about a week ago now I haven’t seen any of these issues since (I was previously seeing them every day). Though it looks like a good number of people experience these problems, it seems possible it might be an issue with a bad sample size of the 7040 series iGPUs.

Just in case it was still a software issue, this is my current kernel version:

Linux 6.12.11-200.fc41.x86_64 x86_64

And I am running 3.03 version of the BIOS with default settings, I haven’t entered the BIOS screen on the new main board yet to change any of the settings.

It may be worth trying to get a replacement board and seeing if that resolves the problem for you.

I’ve noticed the artifacts only appear when panel replay is on. I noticed because panel replay was previously causing other issues (see Fullscreen Games Freeze on Plasma 6 with dGPU), those issues were fixed so I turned panel replay back on but now I’m having these graphical artifacts.

Go on the AMD support page, and download the latest vulkan drivers.
Worked after that for me.
