Laptop 13's compatible parts for Laptop 12?

I have a Framework Laptop 13, Intel 11th Gen. What parts of Laptop 13 are compatible and reusable for Laptop 12? Storage, Wifi module, expansion cards, and anything else? I can see a few of the tech specs here.

I have the following storage and wifl module.

  • Storage: WD_BLACK™ SN750 NVMe - 2TB
  • Wifi module: Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 No vPro

Framework Laptop 12 specs are not announced yet, after they are announced, we can confirm the compatibility for storage, wifi card memory etc

Thank you for your answer! All right. I hope Framework has an interval time between the timing of the tech spec announcement and the timing of the pre-order.

Expansion cards and wifi are probably compatible, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t be.

SSD, RAM aren’t compatible since the Laptop 12 uses those small 2230 SSDs and DDR5 RAM (like the new AMD models). That has already been pretty much confirmed, e.g. on the LTT video. Of course Framework could do last minute changes before the announcement, but pretty unlikely.

As far as I know, they will happen on the same day

I don’t want to delay pre-ordering Laptop 12.

If Framework announces the tech specs and the pre-order on the same day, people like me who have to consider the compatible parts may take more time to understand what to pre-order. As a result, the people who just buy the entire Laptop 12 can pre-order faster. That’s not a fair competition. As a result, I think that this situation may encourage people to buy the entire Laptop 12. Even a few hours of the interval time between the tech spec announcement and pre-order is nice.

A pre-order is done to gauge interest. I don’t think you have to worry about missing out because you need a few hours to work out compatibility; worst case scenario, late comers will just get a later batch.

I think Jonathan is right. Your ram will not be compatible because it is ddr4 and the Framework 12 uses ddr5. Your storage will not be compatible because the Framework 12 uses the smaller form factor 2230 SSDs, whereas the Framework 13 uses the 2280 SSDs. I don’t know about wifi, but that is a cheap enough component that your decision should not hinge on it. Besides, if you do buy a Framework 12, you will presumably want to sell your Framework 13, and whoever you sell it to will want the wifi chip. The expansion cards will be compatible, though aesthetically they might not look good with the new color schemes of the Framework 12. So really you should make your decision on the assumption that you can only really reuse the expansion cards.

…and that’s just the ones I still use all the time, also got three even older ones stuffed in a drawer…
my framework 12 will replace one of those, and I’m probably going to just pull the hard drives and recycle the oldest three, but that’ll still leave me with five laptops in active use.

It’s good to have a backup! Or five

@Jonathan_Haas and @River_Bellamy, thanks for your answer!

As you said, the Laptop 13 Intel 11th Gen uses DDR4 memory, unlike Laptop 12, which uses DDR5. Laptop 13’s spec table on the Framework’s Wikipedia helped me understand it. So, the memory is not compatible in my case.

For the storage, the Laptop 12’s SSD is smaller than the Laptop 13’s SSD according to this video. So, the storage is not compatible.

For the wifi module, I am considering selling or giving my Laptop 13 to someone after I migrate my daily driver from Laptop 13 to Laptop 12. And, if the wifi module is bundled, someone will be happy with it. So, it’s a good idea to buy Laptop 12 with wifi module.

@Destroya I found your comment on this thread on Reddit below. Could you tell us more about your comment on Reddit? I thought the first pre-order first served.

it’s not first come first served, you can think as much as you want, you can also update your pre-order later.

And how long is the interval time of the shipment between Batch N and Batch N+1 from past experiences?

Oh sorry for the misunderstanding, “first come first served” would be right I guess, I was just trying to say that we do not have limited stock for Framework Laptop 12. I’ve updated my comment there.

For the pre-order shipments, I can say that it was different for each product, there were instances where later batch shipments were shipped before the previous ones (if they had different configurations)

This might be helpful (Framework Laptop 16)

Ah all right!

And thank you for the link to the chart of the past shipments! That’s useful!
