So I am starting this tread. I realize this is from my lack of use of my laptop’s on the go and my use of thinkpads. I have just gotten by with the hardware buttons and disabling the trackpad if it bugs me. I typically travel with at least a mouse and often a keyboard.
So how do you make the trackpad not suck? I was hoping to just run latest Ubuntu and Unity with Wayland or not. I switched to KDE and it was much better by default but was a little meh on KDE. I am sure I could get use to it but it just feels less polished. No fingerprint support out of the box etc. I am starting here:
but I am hoping not to be dependent on X.
gnome-tweaks seems to have mostly fixed what I cared about.

For Firefox specifically, assuming you’re using Wayland, try disabling mousewheel.system_scroll_override.enabled and apz.gtk.kinetic_scroll.enabled in about:config and see how that feels.

I run pop!_os 21.04 and the trackpad generally works very well. However, I have two major issues:
Two-finger vertical scrolling is way too fast, making it hard to slowly scroll down a page. Changing the touchpad speed in Settings doesn’t affect the two-finger scroll speed. Horizontal scrolling works just fine.
Pinching doesn’t work, including in programs (like Figma) that usually support it.
Anyone else experienced those, or has suggestions on how to fix it?
The trackpad is absolutely fantastic and despite not having used an Apple device for years, I found myself trying to use the three- and four-finger gestures. I did a bit of searching, and found a way to enable them: https://github.com/silexcorp/fusuma .

Odd bug for trackpad not working initially: (bit me as well)
Downgrade libinput to 1.17.1-1. Version 18 has a bug where it wont work with some trackpads. This is why some distros like Ubuntu work fine with the trackpad and ones like Arch that used the latest release of libinput wont work.
