My fan started making strange grinding noises. I am guessing I am going to have to replace the fan assembly. If so, what part should I order? I can hardly stand how annoying it is and I get ridiculed for having a crappy laptop as a result. You can hear it at the YouTube link below:
You might not have to fully replace it! Try adjusting the fan on the inside slightly by very gently trying to “push” it in a little bit. If that doesn’t work then try removing and reinstalling the entire mainboard.
You might check and see if any fluff has entered the fan and might be causing the noise. If the fan has somehow been shifted out of its position the blades might be just touching something. Reseating the fan might fix the issues.
If it is the bearings then just a new fan is in order. You can search on the Framework parts site for the Framework Laptop 13 under the parts section and locate the fan. If you do not want to bother with the whole disassembly I believe you can purchase the heatsink and fan already assembled. Just be sure to gently clean off the old thermal paste and reapply a quality paste before reinstalling the heatsink.
You can try taking it apart completely and do a full cleaning. You may have to unscrew the fan/heatsink from the bottom of the mainboard to get it out.
I’ve had a comparable issue on my AMD laptop a few weeks ago, where it started “scraping” against something, even though it was completely clean. It got worse to the point that at higher rpms the fan scraped so hard, it stopped itself. Support sent me a full replacement fan/heatsink kit. Unfortunately fans don’t ship without the heatsink yet.
