Just received my Framework desktop, exceptional device. However, I’m not able to use or enable the Windows Studio Effects, should i download additional drivers maybe, im sure that the processor supports it with the available NPU.
I installed the latest edition of Windows, along with the drivers listed in the framework guides for Framework Desktop, not sure what am i missing.
So, this is interesting. I suspect it’s a driver issue as there is no MEP enumerator in the Desktop driver bundle. When installed I would expect to see a AMD IPU Device under System devices in Device Manager. I do not have this device listed on my Desktop either and, like OP, no Windows Studio Effects support. Perhaps @Quin_Chou or @Kieran_Levin has a response?
The less likely issue maybe that Windows Studio Effects support is only available to Snapdragon device but this is unlikely given this announcement.
The previous guidance we had was Windows studio effects require secure bio support to be enabled. Since the desktop does not have a fingerprint reader, it does not meet the licensing requirements for Copilot+, which is a requirement for studio effects.
Also to enable studio effects, you need to have a camera driver that properly sets the MEP supported flags in the camera driver.
All of this means you need a AIO or laptop that has all the pieces built in. Camera+SecureBIO+NPU support.
Your link is good news, we can check if we can enable studio effects with the new lesser requirements from Microsoft. I have filed an internal ticket to track this request.
Also, from the article it says this is only on windows preview builds. Have you tried the preview build to see if studio effects work with your external camera?
Thanks for sharing the articles, so yea I’m using an external camera and running Windows 11 25H2, so thats why Studio Effects is not enabled yet. Hopefully when Microsoft publishes the changes into the main release channel we will get that. Not sure if SecureBio would still be a blocker in that case.
@Kieran_Levin no haven’t tried it with the preview builds yet, would be great if anyone can share the outcome if he’s running the latest insider builds.
Thanks for joining the conversation @Kieran_Levin . Yes, I’m enrolled in the Beta Channel and on build 26220.7344
I think the “preview build” requirement predated 25H2. I’ll check
Windows Hello Face meets this requirement
That’s a good point and, TBH, I am unsure about the Logitech Brio driver as it’s old but there have been firmware updates adding support for WSE like features. I’ve reached out to Logi support for verification. That said, it also needs the AMD enumerator hence the rationale for reaching out to you
Yes, Windows Studio Effects can work with many Logitech webcams, especially newer models like the BRIO, but it depends on your PC having a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and the correct drivers, allowing you to find effects like Background Blur in Windows Settings (Bluetooth & devices > Cameras) or the Camera app.
The Microsoft announcement re Studio Effects for external web cams is dated Sept 2025, about the same time that 25 H2 was released. So its fair to say the Preview is required. Further, the roll-out is to Intel based chips first with no timeline for AMD (or Qualcomm).
The wording of the blog is ambigious in that it talks about USB as an “additional” camera making it unclear if a USB only camera meets the requirement. If reached out to try and get clarity but I don’t know anyone in the Studio Effects area so that’s a long-shot
