cc’ing @Nathan_Alan_Hansen because we chatted about this back when i put in my preorder
my plan since day 1 was to get a framework stylus, but in the interim i picked up a used lenovo usi 2.0 stylus, and it worked for the most part. there was some jank where my notes app would get stuck in a weird state which required me to use the touchscreen to wiggle the canvas so i could write again. i also had to use GNOME because kde kept on dropping the start of a gesture. i bought the framework stylus the instant i got the email saying it was out, and to my shock, all of the janky issues i was having were fixed the instant i started using it. i keep on catching myself writing things and doodling little protogens between tasks which i think is a great sign. i’m considering picking up a paperlike screen protector because drawing feels a bit rough right now.
i am having an issue where the primary button isn’t working in my note taking app specifically, but that’s probably just a linux issue and will be fixed with a reinstall.
Before you get a paper like screen protector just consider this:
I used a paper like Via screens protector with both the Lenovo precision pen 2 and the Metapen m2 and it destroyed the nibs on both in a matter of days. Also the precision pen has a rubbery tip which leaves a nasty residue all over the screen. It didn’t feel good to draw with at all. I think the meta pen uses a similar material and technology to the Framework pen. The protector wore it down to a flat spot which produces a clicking sound while drawing. Eventually it wore down to the metal tip underneath as well.
I just had to compromise and deal with the slippery drawing experience on a normal screen protector because I can’t afford to spend 12 euro for new nibs literally every three days. I find the best combo for rough drawing surfaces is a plastic or felt tip like those that are found on Huion tablets.
Do what you want but I wanted to put my experience just for you to think about.
Otherwise glad you’re enjoying the Stylus! How’s the wobble?
Dumb question: would it be bad for the screen if I use a stylus without screen protector? I’m kind of hesistant to get a screen protector since I’m terrible at those without a foolproof tool lol. But I’ll have to get one if it is bad.
not ubuntu, cachyos (basically arch). i decided to use rnote, and if i didn’t make it obvious it’s just worked:tm:
of course the primary button issue with rnote is the exception but i dont think that’s an issue with the framework stylus itself, probably just a linux moment
funny seeing you here! while we have your attention, have you tested the stylus tips with a paperlike screen protector? i saw that you linked a third party one in another post
i haven’t noticed a wobble of any kind. to put it simply, i draw a line, and the line looks how i want it. which id say is a pretty solid praise of any stylus
I never planned to get a Framework stylus. I have one from Microsoft for a Surface tablet. I’ve used it once with my F12 and it worked okay. I just don’t find it all that useful on a laptop. (I want to write something down, I use a piece of paper.)
I think for drawing the stylus can be useful, but I haven’t found the experience with the apps I have (Inkscape and Gnu Imp) all that compelling.
