New Laptop 12 stuff on the website (parts, KB...)

In the meantime I figured KB means Knowledge Base and I believe with DRAM you were referring to memory. I think the world ‘article’ mislead me, coming right after a sentence about the marketplace. As article can also stand for ‘item’ in a store.

Exactly (it stands for “Dynamic Random-Access Memory**”). First post is now updated, it even has links now

Ha! Indeed  (English isn’t my native language so there’ll definitely be some quirkiness in my posts… then again, “article” also works for a marketplace item in French, so that’s not much of an excuse I guess )

The guides are up, although a bit hidden, but you don’t need to be a certain Mr. Holmes to find them:
DIY edition Quick Start Guide

Thanks for pointing it out.

Looks like there are several FWL12 guides now up:

Battery
Input Cover
Memory
Storage/ SSD

DIY Edition Quick Start Guide (13th Gen Intel)
Pre-Built Quick Start Guide

If I recall, only the OS guides were there last I looked

And now the “What DRAM/memory is supported” knowledge base article is up!

I had originally written here that the 2 memory modules I’m considering were in the list, but it looks like the KB article wasn’t final (might have been a copy/paste from the article for another model, and edits were not done yet?). There were a lot more entries than what’s in the current version.

So, while at first I reported that the Kingston FURY Impact 32GB KF556S40IB-32 was in the list, it is not. Instead there’s the slower (in terms of frequency) KF548S38IB-32. That’s 4800 MHz CL38 instead of the 5600 MHz CL40 of the faster module – keeping in mind that the laptop 12 would cap it to 5200 MHz anyway.

Now, I know it doesn’t mean the KF556S40IB-32 will not work, but I think I’ll feel better if I stick to something that has been tested by Framework, even if only with “Limited validation”.

The other memory module I’m considering is the Crucial 48GB 5600 MHz CL46 CT48G56C46S5, and that one is still in the list (capped at 5200 MHz of course - possibly with a slightly lower latency from what I’ve read somewhere).

I’ll order the memory at the last minute anyway, so I’ll keep refreshing that knowledge base page until then, just in case it changes again

I’m posting this here in the context of “new laptop 12 stuff on the website”, but I’d suggest heading over to this post for Laptop 12 memory choice discussions: Which RAM-modules to use?.

Edit: Rewrote this post after realizing that the knowledge base article I’d seen yesterday was probably work in progress, and the KF556S40IB-32 isn’t listed anymore.

I hope that isn’t a sign that it doesn’t work. That’s the RAM I have sitting in my drawer, waiting for my FW 12 to arrive, lol. I guess I’ll find out once batch 3 ships.

I’ve the Corsair 32GB at 5200 speed waiting on my desk.

Hope the given list is just a starting point and incomplete. Not sure if they would add non-working memory from their tests to the list and declare it as non-working.

Edit: Also interesting that there are only 8 + 16 GB modules fully validated and not a single 32 / 48 GB module.

From previous experience, I think they will show RAM as non-working if they tested it and it didn’t work, but they only show RAM they’ve actively tested, so just because it isn’t on the list, doesn’t mean it won’t work.

So I’m not really worried about the fact that the RAM I have was removed from the list. I’m betting they’d have marked it as not working, rather than remove it from the list. It’s probably more along the lines of what yapakipe said. They were working on getting the page up and originally had the wrong chart listed or something. Either way, I’ll report back if my RAM works once I have my machine.

I was planning on buying a Crucial 32GB RAM, it’s sitting in my shopping cart and I even contacted the company making sure it would be covered by warranty. Now I’m nervous about buying it, maybe I’ll take a look at some 24GBs (aaaand the list doesn’t even have any 24GBs, never mind I guess)

It’s so funny. If we were just a bit more patient. What are two to three months in the grand scheme of things?

I did not choose the early adopter life. It chose me.

It’s funny because I’m not usually on top of new products like this, Framework just happened to announce it exactly when I was looking for a 2-in-1 and here we are. Unfortunately 2 or 3 months is huge for me bc my computer’s really struggling, but then again I’ve made it this far…
The Crucial RAM that’s partially validated is the same product I wanted just different capacity, so maybe it would be okay :crossed_fingers:

As @BigT said - it’s a very early list. TBH I’m not too worried about my module not working - even though it’s missing from the list. Also nrp (framework CEO) said he is driving a 64 GB module in his laptop without issues (at that time at least) and no 64 GB module in the list at the moment.

We all have our perfectly valid reasons to get our laptops asap  Still hoping my Batch 1 makes it to Europe, through customs, onto my doorstep till the end of June. Will be travelling for a few weeks then and it would be the perfect device replacing a tablet and emergency laptop for work. So much more convenient to travel with one convertible than two dedicated devices.

As soon as I’ve accepted it will not make it in time I’ll most likely switch from Gray to Bubblegum. At the moment fingers still crossed :crossed_fingers:

Just wanted to add that the Linux compatibility tab was updated:

Official support for: Fedora, Ubuntu, Bazzite
Compatible community supported: Project Bleufin, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, NixOS

I’m just starting out with Linux and learned the apt package manager, but I’m not interested in any telemetry from Canonical nor in Snaps, so I’m planning on installing Linux Mint. Very glad to see compatibility, but don’t be surprised if you see me back here on the forums asking for help when some quirk pops up .

Woo! Mint is the best! <3

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

The keyboards can be only ordered in Gray (all layouts) or Lavender (US English only).

The only difference seem to be the touchpad, which we can order as a part in either Gray or Lavender.

These seem interchangeable, and I’d expect them to be interchangeable. But can someone actually confirm that they are interchangeable, therefore we could swap a Lavender trackpad in any layout?

It sucks that this is not awailable for other layouts by default if the parts are interchangeable, but I can kind of understand it logistically, if the volumes are just too small to maintain two assembly options.

EDIT: Altough looking at price and complexity, a keyboard swap on an US English Lavender module ordered with the laptop would make much more sense. But that part is not currently available, and since Framework doesn’t tend to share plans, I got no clue if it ever will be.
