New member, couple questions

Hey everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. I’m a new member here.

I just picked up a Framework 13 used off of Facebook Marketplace. I had always wanted one, but they were just a bit out of reach money-wise, so I think I got a sweet deal at $350. It’s an older model with the lowest-config Intel i5-1135G7, but it came with 16 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD, which feels like a great deal especially with recent price hikes.

It has one odd issue. It will not boot unless it is plugged in, but once it starts I can unplug it and it runs fine on battery. I found some older posts discussing the RTC battery fix, so I have already ordered an RTC battery and I am hopeful that will sort it out.

I am also thinking about future upgrades, possibly swapping the mainboard for something like the Ryzen 5 7640U. I have 2x8 GB DDR5 SO-DIMMs from a previous upgrade ready to use. I am also considering upgrading to the 61 Wh battery.

Before I go too far, is there anything I should know about compatibility, pitfalls to avoid, or things the community recommends? I am really excited to finally own one and be part of the community.

That does sound like an issue with the RTC.

My only advice is: make sure to update your firmware.

Carefully check the compatibility of the 61 Wh battery. My (possibly flawed) recollection is that the extra capacity is unusable with the 11th gen mobo (i.e. the battery capacity is seen as being the same as the original).

I’m certain someone will correct me if I’m mistaken. Keep an eye on the replies.
