No external monitors after update to Ubuntu 26.04.01

Hi there,

just upgraded my ubuntu from 24 LTS to the recent 26.04.01 LTS.

After restart my second external display is not recognized. It is connected via USB-C and a hub.

Mouse an keyboard - both connected to this hub - are working.

I tried to connect via HDMI and the framework connector. But this doesn’t help either.

any suggestions?

Thanks

Which BIOS version are you using?

Which Framework Laptop 13 model are you using?

AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series

Well, I’d try to connect the monitor to another computer to completly rule out the possibility of harware issue. You say “second external” meaning you have several external monitor plugged in ? This could be an issue with how ubuntu handle external monitors.

I don’t know how experienced you are with linux but there’s a couple things to try :
When upgrading from 24 to 26, you changed a lot of things, ubuntu yes (your distrib) but probably the kernel version (from 6.xx to 7) and maybe your graphical env too (gnome)
My guess would be a kernel issue. Unfortunatly, I don’t have the same motherboard, nor dual external monitors so hard for me to replicate your issue.

Some question tho : when you say “tryed the HDMI port” did you tried the port on the hub or a HDMI extension card on the laptop ? and if so, I remember that on the framework13 there’s a specific place where the hdmi card doesn’t work (top right if I remember right).

Basically, I would :

  1. try all different configuration to narrow down to a software issue. Also, test cables.
  2. if you can be sure this is a software issue, look for changes in how the linux kernel support. You can deep dive into the changelogs, maybe use AI to help you spot the issue, or try to experiment yourself by installing an older kernel (starting by the latest kernel used by ubuntu 24) and boot from that one (carefull : don’t unisntall the v7 kernel, just install the v6 on the side, and use grub or whatever bootloader you have to choose which kernel to start from).

I know that this can be controversial, but I myself use claude code and it helps a lot in chasing these kind of bugs

An addition:
Even at my other desk at home, the external monitor is not used as before and not recognized. It is usually plugged in the HDMI adapter.

Before this update two different monitor settings were configured, and ubuntu could activate them without further ado.

The situation is easy like this: I had monitor settings. After reboot they’re gone.

No cable issues asf.

I had a similar issue on Tuesday, after an update. Lost the external monitor. Cables and port changes made no difference. I took another update which alterned a couple more packages (sorry I did not record which ones) and whatever was wrong was corrected. If I remember right it was mutter and base-files (I’d guess at mutter). I’m sorry I was kind of busy and did not work out the precise issue… but take a look and see if there are some deferred for phasing updates, you could try applying those, or fall back to the earlier package set.

Good Luck

Yes!

I had an apt update && apt upgrade today.

After restart the external monitor was back!

Solved by waiting

(I scrolled through the list of 20 upgradable packages, but I couldn’t identify a specific one either.)
