hello,
i used to have the following setup i had my framwork connected via usb c to a dell wd19 docking station, from the docking station it was connected via displayport to the kvm and from kvm to the monitor also via displayport and everything kinda worked (i had sometimes issues with the docking station but it mostly worked).
now i have the following problem i don’t own the docking station anymore and my thinking was i can connect to the kvm ( Amazon.de USB 3.0 KVM Switch Displayport 4K @ 144Hz, KVM Switch 2 PC 1 Monitor 8K @ 30Hz, DP KVM Switches for 2 PC Share 4 USB 3.0 Devices Keyboard Mouse Monitor with Wired Remote) via the expension card i have sadly this doesn’t work. my Laptop cannot see the connected monitor. going directly from expension card to monitor works.
from looking at stuff and asking ai i cannot really tell what the best solution is or what kvm / docking station even works. it is not really clear to me for what feature spec i have to look for so it works. i just want to be able to switch between my gaming computer and framework laptop easily.
Mine won’t work, too. I got this KVM switch, my PC works just fine, USB and DP, but my FW16 does not recognise the external Monitor through the switch. USB also does not work on port 3, only on 6 (and maybe the other ports, but didn’t test).
Cables are fine, as I can connect to the monitor directly with no problems, full resolution and refresh rate.
The issue is persistent on both Linux (Zorin OS 18 with KDE Plasma 5) and Windows 11. Tested all three ports, which support Video out.
Interesting. Tell me if you bought something or have found a good setup that works for you. I am interested on what you gonna do about it. I am thinking about maybe buying the other docking station again i saw some cheap used once and then go again through the docking station to the kvm but since I had a couple of issues with it i am hasitant to buy the same thing again.
Seems, the original Framework DisplayPort expansion card is not compatible with some KVMs. I tried another USB-C to DP cable by Ugreen and now it works-ish: Though Ugreen says 8K60 and 4k240, the image is a bit unstable.
It’s this cable: UGREEN USB C to DisplayPort 1.4 Cable 8K 60Hz 30Hz 4K 240Hz 144Hz HDR VRR Thunderbolt 4 3 DP1.4 Cable Compatible with iPhone 17 MacBook Pro Air M2 Mac Mini M4 iPad Pro Air 5 Surface Pro 8: Amazon.de: Computer & Accessories
Edit: Either it’s because there was the USB-C expansion card in between at fault or the port (first tried with port 4), tried again in port 1 without any expansion card, and screen was stable. Needs some further testing, but with the UGreen cable it can definitely be done.
I’m going through this as well. So far I’ve tried two KVM switches (a UGREEN one and a Sedytetoc one), and neither work. Switching of USB peripherals works fine on both, so I know the switches are minimally working, but the DisplayPort signal just doesn’t make it through. No idea why. If I go direct from my Framework 16 to the monitor it works fine.
Is the signal coming out of the DisplayPort expansion card different from a “regular” DisplayPort signal in some way that the KVMs might not recognize?
Update: solved by avoiding the Framework DisplayPort expansion card. It was the problem.
I got a new UGREEN USB-C to DisplayPort cable, plugged it into a USB-C expansion card in my laptop, and both KVM switches I’ve been struggling with now work fine. Hopefully Framework can improve the quality of the DisplayPort expansion card, as it’s essentially just e-waste for me now.
