PSA: Clean your heatsinks

This is probably more necessary for people with pets, but I just discovered that my Framework 16 had dog hair packed into the heatsinks after a year of use. Had to pull the GPU out and remove the fans from the housing to get all of it out, and it’s running noticeably quieter now.

I’ll make a point of doing this every few months going forward so it doesn’t get as bad, others may want to do the same.

It can be surprising how much dust can build up over time. And it’s not always visible from the outside. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. I’ve taken apart some older PCs lately, and pretty much all of them needed a good cleaning. Good reminder. Cheers!

This is what a friends (non framework) laptop looked like a few years ago. That black rectangle is supposed to be the port between the fan and the heatsink. Take care of your equipment folks.

The ability to deeply clean a framework laptop is an underrated feature. I use my laptop at outdoor music festivals for work. Some are more dusty than others. My last laptop was a razor and i was never able to get that thing completely clean. But the framework only takes a couple minutes to deeply clean it. I am sure it prolongs the life of the fans

Agreed. And if the fan does happen to die, it’s also real easy to find the correct replacement part and swap it out.
