[Resolved] USB-C Port Blown

Hi all,

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue as of late. I bought my 7840U board around June of last year, so it’s just around a year and a half old as of today. It seems like my bottom right port is dead. Not the expansion card itself, but the port on the motherboard.

I noticed it first when my MicroSD card reader wasn’t picking up my card. No biggie, I thought, maybe it was just my OS not playing nice.Didn’t think about it til swapping out the expansion for the HDMI card. Also no dice. Restarted my computer, still nothing. Tried a new Linux distro, but…still no response. The port itself seems to be dead, and I’m baffled as I’m both really gentle with my electronics and basically only used the bottom right port occasionally.

Conveniently I’m outside the timeframe for the limited warranty, so I guess my board is just smoked on one side. This purchase ended up being a rather expensive year and a half’s worth of otherwise good service. This’ll be end of my journey with Framework once this board gives up the ghost. I just wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else. Might put the still good parts on the marketplace once I figure out what machine I’m using next.

Check the how-to pages on how to do a motherboard reset. That sometimes fixes random issues. The USB-C controller might have just got stuck in a bad state.

These are outputs, have you tried change back to USB-C and charge the laptop using this port(use as input)?

Will do this today and report back.

Okay, I can confirm this worked. I got a little overly annoyed at the idea my port was down outside of the warranty period and let my mind jump to conclusions. Consider this one fixed, and thanks to both you and Charlie for weighing in.

A significant problem just outside warranty can easily kill one’s mood, it’s understandable. Glad that fixed it. You could add “[Resolved]” to your thread title, that’s what’s normally recommended. It lets those with a similar issue know that there might be a solution here. And tells those looking to help that there’s no need anymore.
