With the announcement and recent release of these personal spark devices by NVDIA I believe an opportunity has come for framework to create modularized DGX spark desktops or even better… RTX spark laptops.
Bringing in the combination GraceBlackwell chip to framework and producing a very powerful AI machine for the tech forward framework community.
As exciting as the tech itself is, I’m not too excited about what it means for repair-ability, sustainability and upgrade-ability. It’s a single chip with the cpu/gpu/ram all in one. It’s great that it’s ARM, but we don’t even have prices yet. I have a feeling this will be a $1,500 - $2,500 price point just for the chip and the last thing I want to do is spend $3,000+ on a laptop that arguably goes against everything Framework stands for.
I will admit there is a part of me that wants to experience it, but at what cost!
Yeah it will be expensive. Though I think there are ways to make it upgradable Yes the CPUGPU are connected to each other which is a big plus in some ways. the Ram can be encased and made upgradable if you use LPCAMM2 and only lose about 10% in performance vs lumping that in with the CPUGPU.
I’m sure repairability will be a challenge, but my biggest worry is NVIDIA. They really make it sound like their goal is for everything to go to a rental/subscription model. That may not be what this chip represents, but I think it’s what the company wants. That and AI.
Still, it will be interesting to see how good the laptop version is when it hits the market. And how much it costs.
Honestly intel feels like the only player not trying go exclusively for that trend now, and I say this as someone who was an amd fan back when the amd processors were genuinely far worse. I still have a cortisol response looking at cpu temps from the FX series processors that had shutoff temps close to what modern processors intended low load temperatures are. That’s how long I’ve been an amd fan, but it still looks like they are going for the same dodgy goals as nvidia (Even if they have to play catchup) and its clearly be time to reconsider.
I’m frankly curious now how much cheaper the cut down intel G3 processors are going to be relative to the other 390m gpu equipped processors, or if the label as “For handhelds” is going to spike the price higher than the lower end 3XX chips that still have good IGPU’s. If the G3 and G3X are sufficiently cheap, I’d love to see a real laptop in one just so see what they could manage with the cooling solutions of a full scale device.
