[SOLVED] Just Installed Mint 21.3 Cinnamon. High Fan Usage When Watching Videos

I was running LMDE6 on my FW16 but was having major problems and crashed. So, I just installed Mint 21.3 Cinnamon with a normal installation (no installation problems). The fans ramp up only when I watch videos on YouTube. With other websites, the fans run normally. Any suggestions? Here is the system setup. Do you see any tweaks that need to be made?

I haven’t tried Mint Edge yet. Would that be a better solution?

You don’t need Edge at this point - all it does is install a newer kernel. You can do this manually in LM by going into Update Manager - View - Linux Kernels.

I’m running a 6.5 kernel in LM 21.3 and I see they just added a 6.8 kernel (which will probably be the default in LM 22, due any day now).

Make sure to make a Timeshift backup just before you change the kernel in case something goes wrong.

Newer kernels contain a lot of fixes for power management and optimizations for newer hardware.

@Fraoch, I updated to the 6.5 kernel, as you recommended. I looked at the bug report for 6.8, which is too buggy at this point to use. I’ll wait for the update to install that. Thanks for your help.

Let us know if that impoves things for you. It should?

A post was merged into an existing topic: FW16 heat and fan control

curious @Mark_E_Jeffries what command you used for that summary. looks more concise than things like lshw

@strobert, I’m not sure which summary you are talking about—the system summary or the summary on the 6.8 kernel. If it is the system summary, I used the System Information app and clicked on copy to clipboard. Then, I pasted it in with the preformatted text. If it is the kernel, I followed Fraoch’s instructions, selected 6.8, and then selected bug reports.

the system info. gotcha a GUI tool in Mint (given the preformated I was thinking maybe a nice CLI tool I hadn’t run across yet  )

thank you for replying
