[solved] Problem with one of three DELL WD19DCS docking stations

System: Framework 16, CPU: Ryzen™ 7 7840HS, no dGPU, OS: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Symptom: I’ve got a total of three of these docking stations. Two of them work, the third doesn’t talk to any of the monitors with the FW16. It does work with my Company-issued Dell laptop, though, so it shouldn’t be hardware related. Both of my own docks are running the latest firmware. Dell even offers a firmware updater for Linux that did update the previously (and still) working dock. Any hints on what to do, apart from moving the non-working dock to the company notebook?
One of them is company-issued and the other two bought used to equip my private work spaces at two locations.

I don’t agree with the conclusion that it’s not hardware related. It obviously is hardware related if 2 work and one doesn’t!

However I can conclude it’s not FAULTY hardware.

I’ll point out a differencd in your logs that a different downstream port type is detected in both cases. Here’s where that message comes from in the code:

What I would suggest you do is:

cross reference this behavior against the latest upstream stable kernel, 6.8.7 at the of writing. If it’s fixed there, great!
Determine what about the 3rd dock is different. Different firmware version on the dock? Different connections to the monitors? Different monitors? Do some monitors have DSC turned on but not others?You need to isolate what is causing the actual issue.

Same firmware, same cables, same monitors. Neither monitor works with the problematic dock, both work with with the other one. I can test with another set of monitors and cables, too. I’m using the DP connections.
I haven’t got the slightest idea how to check against different kernel versions. I’ve updated to the latest OEM kernel, currently running

Testing with the Dell Notebook, I tried both USB cables (that are fixed to the dock) connected one at a time and both work to run the displays.

Did you test with the updated kernel yet? Here are some binary builds you can test with.

This will rule out whether it’s a bug already fixed in the upstream AMD graphics driver. The one in Ubuntu 22.04 is multiple kernel releases old now.

And you’re absolutely sure it’s the same firmware on the docks? Like fwupdmgr shows the same output for all of them? Specifically the mst controller in the dock is the piece of firmware I’m most concerned with.

fwupdmgr get-devices doesn’t list the non-working dock.

Yeah firmware does look right, 5.7.4 on the MST controller on both of them. Have you already tried power cycling the dock itself?

Sure, every time I move between rooms to test the other set of monitors or right now to change docks 'cause I’ve only one power adapter installed (lack of free power sockets)

I did try and re-install the firmware. After checking the device with the dell updater, it became visible. Install went through, but no change. Monitor still doesn’t show a picture. Now how to change the kernel? I’ve never done that before

The link I gave you, grab the unsigned and modules Debian packages. Turn off secure boot and install them. If you need to revert you would just apt remove them.

Seems like the cable of the non-working docking station has some issue that’s affecting only the operation on my FW16 running either Ubuntu or Fedora (officially supported versions). The cable module is interchangeable, and switching between docking stations the error would follow the cable. So I bought another cable (together with a 240W brick I don’t need) for 46€, and now the third dock is working, too.
