Spilled Soda on the Laptop 13

Well, during class yesterday, I managed to spill a pretty decent amount of soda over the input cover. I’m happy to report that the keyboard is water resistant enough that I had time to shut it off, dry the puddle, flip it over, and unscrew the cover before it even touched the internal electronics. Thanks for the engineering!

I just did this with the FW16. In my case it was a little worse as I didn’t catch it right away. I’m a truck driver and I had left a cup of soda in my sleeper. I was distracted by a warehouse worker and completely forgot about the soda. I moved my truck which knocked the cup onto my laptop which was sitting on the bed. I didn’t discover it until a few hours later after I’d been driving. Luckily only the key board and touch pad had been soaked. The entire time the laptop had been running. When I discovered it, It was still running as if nothing had happened. I detached the keyboard and touch pad and cleaned them the best I could. Keys were a little sticky but they mostly worked. touch pad was not working unfortunately. I looked under them and no liquids had managed to get past the mid plate. Only a few drops were on the mid plate at all. about a week later I was able to get to a hotel and I used a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and i deep cleaned every part (Even removed the touchpad from the module). At first the touch pad still wouldn’t work but tonight it started working again. Keys are still sticky a little. Probably have to clean it multiple times before it’s permanently clean. Shift keys don’t seem to shift but caps works. Overall I’m impressed. Other laptops have completely died on me before with the same spills.

I spilled a TINY amount of water on my 2022ish MBP, which caused the keyboard to become entirely non-functional; some keys wouldn’t work, others would spew random letters, etc. The cost to replay was 500 USD because they had to replace the entire motherboard as well. Now I have a Framework 13.

While my keyboard now mostly works the secondary functions like shift combos don’t work. Spacebar is a lit bit wonky, you really have to hit it hard for it to work. I’ll probably replace it once i make room in my budget.
