The RX 7700S 100W limit in Windows, which does not exist in Linux

The 100W limit in Windows, which does not exist in Linux

I have been the owner of a Framework 16 laptop for several weeks. I chose the Radeon RX7700S graphics module because I only use Linux.

When the laptop was delivered, I first installed Windows to check the hardware under Windows.

I noticed that, as I had read many times before, it is not possible to adjust the TDP limit of the graphics card.

Under Windows, I tried to adjust the TDP limit settings using MSI Afterburner. Every time I activated the option and the laptop had to be restarted, the option was deactivated again.

For the past two weeks, I have only been using Linux on the laptop (Manjaro) and I am generally very satisfied with the performance and operation.

What puzzles me, however, is the fact that under Linux it is possible to set the TDP limit of the RX7700S with “LACT,” which is not possible under Windows.

A maximum limit of 120 watts can be set for the GPU (which is also officially specified by AMD).

And it actually seems to work, because I used the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark to test it. With 100 watts, an average of 116 FPS was displayed, and with the increased power limit of 120 watts, it was 122. (DX12 and Ultra settings)

It’s a real shame that this doesn’t work under Windows, because I would have liked to have made some comparisons beforehand to compare them later with Linux. Now I just have to try out for myself what works and what doesn’t.

That’s a huge shame. Hopefully there is some kind of Windows analogy for what your Linux distro is doing under the hood to make that TDP go higher.

Does this work? Framework Control - A tool for: Fan Control (Curve), Sensors, Power Control, Battery Information (Windows, Linux coming soon…)

Interesting. I don’t have an FW16 so I can’t test it. My Intel FW12 isn’t supported either. But that looks promising-- @Scale_Hardwarebox_De probably would want to check this out.
