Thunderbolt dock powers itself off when I connect Framework 13 (Ryzen 7040)

Video is worth a thousand words: https://youtu.be/Nd2rOGd1g5Q

I picked up a Thunderbolt dock from Monoprice last month and it was working fine until yesterday, when it started shutting itself off when I docked my Framework 13 laptop into it.

  • Windows 11
  • Framework 13, Ryzen 7040
  • Updated all drivers to latest versions, BIOS to 3.05

I’m not seeing anything in Event Viewer when this occurs, other than a Kernel-Power “power source change” event.

I’m plugging the cable into the “Thunderbolt-compatible” ports, aka top left and top right. Both experience the same issue.

Other factors:

  • Other devices (my partner’s Surface Book, or a Pixel 7) can dock successfully, it just seems to affect the Framework 13
  • A “standard” USB-C hub connected to the Framework works fine

Any ideas where to start?

Looks like the issue might have been faulty power - I plugged the dock directly into an outlet (bypassing an old surge protector) and it seems to be working as expected. I’ll try replacing with a new surge protector to confirm.
