Hi, I just received my brand new Framework 13 DIY Kit and have finished assembling it. In fact I am typing this very post on my new laptop (I have to say that this is a great keyboard!). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for new Laptop 13 owners? Thanks!

Hi! I’m currently running Windows 11 and I’m planning to do some programming, watch some movies, and do some schoolwork.
I recommend changing the max battery limit to 80-95%, depending on your use case, to preserve battery health.

If you haven’t already, updating to the newest firmware is a good first step, and honestly after that there’s not much Framework-specific setup you have to do. Maybe just removing Windows-bloat you don’t need (there are good guides online), and then you’ll be off to the races!

If you keep your laptop plugged into charge mostly I’d recommend setting the charge limit to 60%. My behavior is such that when the charger is disconnected the charge level seldom drops below 30% before it’s reconnected. YMMV.

Do you know a good app to monitor CPU temps?
I use Core Temp. Works with AMD and Intel CPUs. It’s regularly updated.

If you have the 61Wh battery limiting it’s time at full charge is important, there is a know issue with them puffing up. Thankfully there is a default on “battery extender” function in the BIOS designed to mitigate this if you leave it fully charged uninterrupted for some days. Personally I disable battery “extender function” and use the hard limit in BIOS with the software (linked below) to fully charge as needed without needing to go back into BIOS. There are some Framework specific software you can check out allowing things like fan and battery limits control in an easy GUI interface (interfacing with the system via EC tool) such as GitHub - Steve-Tech/YAFI: Yet Another Framework Interface and Framework Control (Linux/Windows) - A tool for: Fan Control (Curve), Sensors, Power Control, Battery Information
You can actually remove the fan to clean the heatsink of dust/lint obstructions and clean the fan Loud fan | excessive CPU throttling | laptop running hot? Clean the fan!
