Trackpad Misalignment: How Common?

I just submitted a support request because of a few different issues with my input cover. My trackpad is misaligned, kinda inconsistent with it’s clicks and movement, and makes a kind of rattle sound when clicked (especially on the right side). I also have the input over peeking out from the rest of the case around the trackpad and the front corners. And then my keyboard has been occasionally missing inputs and the bottom left corner of my space bar wasn’t registering inputs for a bit, but got better after shooting it with some canned air (the bottom left corner still makes a slightly different sound and has a different feel to the rest of the spacebar). I re-seated the input cover and checked if any screws were loose, but that hasn’t fixed any of my issues.

Another report:

I’m in Batch5 and my trackpad is like yours, in addition the right click results awkward because it goes down in two steps: the first click does nothing, and the second one finally works (most of the times) :downcast_face_with_sweat:
I prefer the click by tapping mode so this doesn’t bother me much, but sometimes I need the “real” right-click (eg. using linux on livecd/usb) and it feels very awkward :face_with_spiral_eyes:

It is probably dragging on the side. Mine felt similar to that out of the box. It’s not ideal to have to mess with it on a new machine, but if you are willing to try to center it better yourself, I bet you can get it working better.

This is what mine was like as well.

It was really simple to fix, just unscrewing the seven (?) screws, shifting it a little, then re-tightening, and it all works fine now.

Update: Support got back to me and asked for a bunch of pictures and for me to try a bunch of stuff. None of the stuff worked and I sent them the pictures, and after a couple of other smaller things they decided that I needed a new input cover, display, and hinge kit (I had other issues). It took just about a day from their first reply for them to decide I need replacement parts, which was really fast and appreciated (my first email was sent on the Saturday of Labour day weekend, and their first reply was at like, midnight just after Labour day). The parts are supposed to arrive tomorrow so I will hopefully replace everything tomorrow and report back.

Also, Support recommended I try re-aligning the trackpad, but I wasn’t able to fix it that much, and it’s slid back into its misaligned position over time, so the re-alignment strategy won’t work for everyone.

I don’t really know if the faulty parts were caused by bad shipping or not (I sent them pictures of the packaging, and there were some signs of impact though nothing insane imo) and I don’t know if others will have a similar situation to me, but I would recommend reaching out to support because I had a very good experience with them.

Update 2: I received the parts on Wednesday and all of them seemed to be in a fine condition, so I started the process of replacing the hinges and display. Everything was pretty much fine, but once I got to removing the display cover (the plastic part below the display), I noticed that my display didn’t have the four screws that secure the display to the top cover. I was a bit baffled and reached out to support asking what I should do next since there’s not enough extra screws in the chassis to replace the missing ones and this seems like a pretty alarming mistake with the assembly of my laptop.
They’ve said that they’re going to just completely replace the laptop now, and I agree since I have no idea how many other issues this device could have, and between the completely absent screws and some dirty fingerprints I found on the chassis underneath the battery, I’m worried that my unit could be sloppily assembled in other areas that could compromise it.
So, I guess the display can work mostly fine without those 4 screws in it, since I’ve had this laptop for almost a month and have used it without any glaring issues with the display beyond a little backlight bleed at the bottom and the hinges slowly getting worse (obviously that doesn’t mean that you can just not put screws in, this is probably actually causing a bunch of issues). I wish I wasn’t the one to discover that, but support has still been good so it isn’t the end of the world. Hopefully the new laptop will be properly assembled and I can use it without worrying that I might lose the only laptop I have for uni.

Today I noticed my whole lid was misaligned and wasn’t actually able to clear the notches on either side of the laptop on occasion.

I was able to fix it by undoing all the screws for the hinges and applying pressure in the opposite direction of the misalignment while tightening the screws again. My original unit also had this problem. I’m currently using a replacement unit.

It took a bit of strength and effort but now its better. Seems like everything that can be misaligned often is on the framework 12.

I’m very terrible about alignment on like phones and stuff too, always needed those self alignment tools lol. So when support told me to try to fix it I made it way worse.

My replacement trackpad unfortunately is misaligned too, the bottom right is a little pressed in and you easily tell it’s misaligned when looking down at it by seeing the gap from like the top center to top right corner. Even like going around from the edges of the trackpad you can feel the (height?) difference. The first one was making like crunchy noises when i first got it whenever i right clicked with it for a while too. Guess I’ll just stick with this replacement as it doesn’t seem to have any issues functionally, just misaligned  .

Just reporting my trackpad was a bit wonky on arrival (batch 10.)

Just undid the seven screws, lifted it up, moved it a little tiny bit, reinstalled with even pressure, and works a lot better now.

I also got a batch 10 with a misaligned track pad and display. :]

Misaligned display? That sounds like a pain.

What do you mean by works a lot better? I hadn’t checked my trackpad before (looking at it now, I think one or two corners might be off by a mm or so, I can see that the shadows are deeper on some pats but nothing super noticeable). I have thought the trackpad felt ever so slightly - enough to be irritating - delayed in responding to touch, or sometimes it felt like I had to press harder and more distinctly than I would for the trackpad on my other laptop (was top o the line when I bought it in 2021). I wonder if it’s a software thing or hardware and I should mess with it a little.

Main problem is the trackpad on my unit was deep on one corner compared to the other. So clicks weren’t always registering correctly and did not feel right to click once in a while. Since realigning it works perfectly fine and is a nice even surface when doing clicks anywhere.

I have that deeper corner too on the bottom right, on both the original and replacement. The first one was way worse though, I think I made it (the first one) a lot worse because I’m beyond terrible at aligning things lol without a foolproof tool.

It really is. It can’t really be adjusted as easily as the track pad. oh well.

Mine came with a pretty awful double click on the right side, very poorly fitted.

I loosened all the screws around the trackpad, then pushed it toward the keyboard and made sure it was central. Works perfectly now.

Just FYI if you loosen the screws and it doesn’t seem to really move then you forgot a screw, there is one in the center middle at the top or bottom that needs to be loose too. It should obviously move. Not a hard fix.
