Trying to get Valve Index VR headset running on Mint

Which Linux distro are you using? Mint

Which release version? 22

Which kernel are you using? 6.8

Which BIOS version are you using? 3.05

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series W/ Graphics Module)

Just got the FW16, and am very impressed with how easy it was to get everything running on Mint with minor tweaking! I have managed to get all my stuff moved and running except for SteamVR. The headset fails to connect at all through the USB-C port on the graphics module, either directly or using an adapter. I was able to connect through an adapter to a USB-C port on the side which launched the SteamVR app successfully, no noticeable issues. Trying to get any game to run, though, is not working: the display is completely garbled and corrupted, or has significant lighting and geometry breaks. I have switched kernels, swapped to the beta of SteamVR and back, and tried Proton, but none of it worked. I am stumped and would love some help. Has anyone had any success with Valve Index VR and Mint on the FW16?

Thanks.

I haven’t tried this and I don’t run Mint, BUT - are you saying you plugged into one of the USB-C input module ports on the left or right of your FW16? I think you might want to connect directly to the USB-C port for the GPU itself. You can find that on the rear of the laptop (directly on the graphics module).

I believe this may be relevant, where someone got it working on the graphics module:

Note: They end up using something other than steamVR, however games on steam were still playable through their solution

Hey thanks Conor. I tried going directly into the GPU in the back and got no connection at all. Still working on it.
