USB Port 5 and 6 reset error -- intermittent

I am probably going to be contacting support, but.

So it started with external SSD enclosures using the JMS-583. But then it get progressively worse.

Sometimes, some random accessory would not work. Logitech mice? (the USB-A dongle).

Then the Framework SD Card Reader, and also the 2.5G Ethernet. Big deal.

Recently it evolved into my HTC One (on Port 5; Port 6 might have issues like Port 3; more on that later).

Then now it is my Kingston 1GB DataTraveller Mini Fun ..DTMFY/1GB.

All of them report “port reset failed”.

  • Windows 10 22H2/11 24H2. Ubuntu 2404.

Port 235 are Type-A. Port 1 and 4 are Type-C. 6 is Framework SD.

I want to know if anyone else have any similar issues. Note this is not related to power-hungry devices such as external drive enclosures, etc.

Confirmed not working in ubuntu 2404. BIOS version 3.0.5.
You can tell by the light on the flash drive briefing lighting up and immediately turning off. Usually this happens around 5x. Then Windows will throw “port reset error”. In linux seems like nothing happens, which isnt great.
some lsusb

Some kernel

Also, a BIOS reset did not help. This is kind of surprising, because usually it goes away after … some stuff happened. But now it’s working again (???)

Perhaps it has to do with the camera/microphone shutter? Re-attaching keyboards? But like the keyboards just .. work. So.

I know the front ports are hard capped to 4.5W delivery, so external drives will often not work reliably on them, but things like mice, webcams, flash sticks, etc… should work reliably.
I ended up basically only using them for USB-A.

I’m suspect its not working reliably for the SD card reader.

If the issue persists for low-power devices, that isn’t right and you might have a hardware fault.

In none of the cases had I ran into power issues – the “whatever I insert” is reliably powered (you can tell by like, power LEDs, etc). You can also tell, because on Porrt 2 and 3, they work.

Perhaps. but the SD card reader is a low-powered device. And it’s by framework. If they can’t design something that can work with their laptop, it’s their problem.

correct.

It briefly worked (last night), but then it didn’t. (now). For about 4 hours (lol)

And here’s the fun part – it’s not like I have a dead port, no no. It says “port reset fail”, not something like “USB Device Descriptor fail” or “overcurrent”. Which suggest the hardware (at least the components) are working properly.

I have heard things because the Port 2 and 3 is on a different controller vs port 5 and 6. And one of them control the keyboard while the other control the not keyboard.

Port 5 and 6 is indeed the one with the input deck, and the fingerprint reader. I guess because the connector is closer to that.

And again, its working now, but wasnt last night. Which were after when it was working last night, which was working when it wasn’t working yesterday.

I’ve had none of those issues on mine, I strongly suspect its a hardware issue as you’ve replicated it on two different OS’es and as you said one of the devices showing symptoms (sounds like all do) is an official Framework one.

I recommend contacting support. It sounds like the one usb redriver circuit has a problem.
