I ordered Framework pro 13 and I am considering getting ssd. I am thinking either WD Black 7100 or 8100. The reasoning is that 8100 is Gen5 but still pretty power efficient. I am bit worried about thermals, because AFAIK 13 pro won’t fit heatsink version and I assume there shouldn’t be problem drivers wise either.
I took the risk and have ordered a 2TB SN8100 in waiting for my 13 Pro. My preorder doesn’t arrive until September so will be a while.
Happy to feedback testing once I have it.
The SN8100 is very efficient and I think the heat pad transferring to the aluminium chassis should be ok.
I was also looking at the crucial p510 which uses the Phison E31T controller that framework themselves list as an option (although they list only the controller, not the brand/model).
The E31T seems to be a heat/power champ in the Gen5 series, albeit with a significant speed deficit (but still faster than Gen4 on paper) and DRAM-less compared to the SM controller on the SN8100 or Crucial T710.
Phison is also releasing the E37T controller later this year, on paper this seems to hit similar speeds to the SM2508 whilst drawing less power, might be something to watch out for. I imagine we won’t see retail units using this until the year end/early 2027 though.
