Hi Y’all, I’m a nursing student and healthcare worker somewhere in California.
I like fixing things, but definitely an amateur… except for bikes. I’ve been a mechanic at a few different bike shops.
I’ve fixed my own PCs since around 2005, built my own since 2008 and the last laptop I bought was a 2012 Macbook Pro which I got refurbished from Apple in 2014. I upgraded it with an SSD but left the RAM as it was since it came with a decent amount at the time. I should really get into that machine and repaste everything, add RAM and put in a bigger SSD, but I kinda need it to just function ‘cause the spyware we use for our tests at school doesn’t run on my my daily driver tablet that I use at school otherwise.
Looking to get a Framework ‘cause I like stuff I can repair and upgrade. I also like the idea of not having to remember to bring a different device (or multiple devices) on days that I have exams.
color me impressed, since i thought Macbooks could not be upgraded in anyway. When you say ‘repaste’ do you mean adding gooey to avoid overheating certain parts?
Until the move to their own silicon, MacBook Pros were fairly easy to upgrade. My 2006 second-gen Intel MacBook was super easy, you just used a coin to turn the battery latch then it was three retained screws to pull the cover for both the HDD and RAM.
Yeah, inside a laptop you’d take the fan shroud off the main board, clean off the residue from the previous thermal pads and then put on new thermal pads and reinstall everything.
On a desktop PC it’s similar, just on a larger scale and there are more options for cooling pastes.
I bought my framework 13 factory second as I failed to find an suitable laptop with an iso-keyboard by the time my computer died of electron rot. so far I’m very happy with the experience.
I was disappointed when I learnt about the framework 12 as I not more then a week before the announcement had asked about future plans concerning in part a touchscreen. and even though I understand support couldn’t outright say what they had coming. They could at the very least mentioned the upcoming announcement, “We typically announce new products at the end of february” would have been immensely helpful to feel less burnt.
now it wouldn’t really have matterd as I needed a computer right then, even waiting for the event might not have been an option even if I had known about it.
I also asked support If I needed to be concerned about anything in particular while sharing my intended spec, including my intention to buy the 11th gen motherboard, with no mention of the RTC issue. It would have at least been good to know my device isn’t effected if that is the case, which i doubt.
on a happier note I installed Gentoo Linux without major hiccup, and have a device almost completely customised to my needs.
Hello. I’m introducing myself. I’m retired from IT. Been in this business since the 1980’s. Retired about 10 years ago from my last job, being IT Director at a Massachusetts Charter School.
Now my main interests are my grandkids, 5 and 3, and one on the way in a few weeks. We live in a three-family house we purchased with my daughter and son-in-law. The grandkids have 24/7 access to us since we live downstairs from them and that’s ok with me.
I used to be bleeding edge in my technology. Now I prefer to let others do that. My laptop is 10 years old. Framework has been on my radar for years.
I’ve pre-ordered a next generation 13” pre-built AMD Ryzen laptop.
I’m a high school freshman from Belgium (scrolling through this thread there appear to be other Belgians here too, good day to y’all). I’ve been a techie since I was nine in 2020 when I found Linus Tech Tips on YouTube, and I found Framework in 2021 through, you guessed it, the initial Linus Tech Tips video. I was very impressed as USB-C based modular I/O was what I had thought was the ideal solution, but I never thought a company would actually implement it. However, I never bought the FW13 as, of course, 10-year-old allowances don’t stretch that far, nor do 14-year-old ones for that matter. However, the FW12 will almost certainly be within my budget so I decided to join this community (I’ve been reading it since 2021 but never bothered joining because it would feel wrong). Look forward to having fun with y’all on this community.
I’m Denis, ex-software engineer (in Canada, the UK, and France), turned would-be homesteader a few years ago (in Dordogne, France).
Like most people in this community I’m interested in Framework for the upgradability/repairability ethos. I like things that last and can be upgraded and fixed, as my PC can attest: Motherboard and processor from 2009 (core i7 920), graphics card from 2011 (with a whopping 1GB memory), 24GB RAM (triple channel!) from a couple of years ago, a mix of HDDs/SSDs from different eras… I still happily run Blender (not the latest version though), Gimp, QGIS, VS Code and various build pipelines, Darktable, webodm etc., all of that in Linux Mint (dual booting Win10 for the rare occasions I need it).
I preordered a Laptop 13 with Ryzen AI 5 CPU… but I’m hesitating, and might switch to a Laptop 12. Its apparent sturdiness is quite appealing for my usage, as well as the touchscreen/pen. I know it wouldn’t be as powerful as the Laptop 13, but probably still much better than my current PC Only one day before we have more info on the Laptop 12 and preorders open, so decision time is coming!
(any advice on my assumption that the Laptop 12 would be more powerful than my 2009 PC is welcome
That’s 310% improvement on multicore and (seemingly) 180% on singlecore, don’t ask me why it’s higher then the 1334U, I’m guessing some erroneous data somewhere is doing that.
Hello! I’m Daniel, a software developer, chess player, and very occasional blogger in the US. I recently got a refurbished Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 5 7640U), on which I am running Fedora 41. I’ve had it for just over a month now, and I’ve been very happy with it.
I probably won’t be posting very much; I’m more of the lurker type. But, I decided to make an account so I could keep track of a few threads more easily, and having done that I figured I should say hi.
Hi, I assume everybody here is interested in Frame.work for more or less the same reason and I am no exception. I am a founder and CEO of a company in Prague and decided a few weeks ago with my colleagues to say continuous good-bye to our Apple devices. I preordered a few Laptop 12 pieces and when our very helpful success manager sends the checkout link, I will order a DIY Laptop 13 Cooler Master setup. Has anybody done it already? It would be great to discuss. Also I am wondering if anybody has developed a decent 5G modem/expansion card (with Linux support).
