Welcome! Please introduce yourself - 2nd edition

For the Aussie supercar task, you may want to look at a bluetooth speaker. The built-in speakers may tire you more quickly.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve already got that covered :+1:

Just ordered the 13. It’s stuck in Memphis, but hopefully I’ll get it soon.

I’m a physics teacher presently leaning into bioacoustics. Let’s hope AMD can straighten out any ROCm issues with accessing GPU cores, because I’ve got a pile of data to process!

I’ve been stuck using a ā€œcompanyā€ laptop, with Windows, and my employer is getting more and more difficult about what software I can use. So it seemed like a perfect time to support Framework who has had my attention for some time.

I had been using Manjaro (XFCE) at home for a while, but I think I’ll try Arch (KDE, maybe?) this time. I’m far from expert on sysadmin stuff in Linux, but I can generally figure my way through things…

Hi Framework Community,

We’re a team of students at Michigan Technological University working in the Open Source Hardware Enterprise (OSHE). We’re excited to start working with the Framework community to develop new products for the Framework ecosystem using the modular design that Framework has given us.

Our first projects will be:

  • A laptop expansion card with an I²C/CAN interface

  • A performance display module for the Framework Desktop

We picked these because CAN is something we use often in our work, and a desktop performance display felt like a fun and useful way to add usability into the front panel.

We’d also love to hear your thoughts as to what kinds of modules you would like to see developed for Framework?

Hi folks– I learned about Framework earlier this summer and finally decided to order one. I’ve got a Bachelors in Joint CS-Math, so I’ve got some comfort. But I want to understand the hardware of computers better. I still feel pretty limited and inexperienced. Since Framework feels like friendly legos for laptops, I’m starting here! Got an AI 3000 Laptop 13 and am considering what distribution to use. Before I ordered it, I’d taken my old Dell and, for the first time and with help, eradicated windows and installed Linux Mint xfce. I see that Framework has officially supported Fedora 42 and Bazzite (or whatever– I don’t have the spelling in front of me). Then I see the forums note that Mint seems like a community supported distro, but it’s not listed on the getting started page. So just wrapping my head around things at the moment!

Hah! I went to Tech! (I’m two posts up.)

Physics student, though, so I didn’t go through an Enterprise program. Very cool, though, for people unfamiliar: Interdisciplinary team that functions like a ā€œCapstone Projectā€ that you might be involved with for several years of undergrad. Twenty or so different teams focused on different topics. Great, hands-on experience.

Any snow up there yet?

I’d be interested in any audio-themed modules. Recording in particular. E.g., optimizing SNR for a USB mic or interfacing with a field recorder. Most field recorders have a USB port, but not sure if any receive power that way (most are A, not C, that I’ve seen), and I’m not a hardware expert, but I figure there’d still be room for optimization.

ā€œBack in my dayā€ Tech had a lot of audio-inclined folks. Not sure if that’s still the case. Ice speaker boxes at Winter Carnival still?

Hi all,

I am from central europe and I do not own a Framework product yet. I have preordered a Framework 16 with the 370 HX and no graphics module. My main goal is having mediocre gaming performance while still having a really low power consumption. Of course, I could just upgrade to a GPU module if I will need the performance in the future. Besides that I would be open to just get a used FW 16. My main reason for ditching my gaming desktop pc and selling it in favor of a FW16 is basically just really low power consumption while being repairable. I did the math and my electricity bill will be 25% lower considering my current usage. The Framework Desktop is not repairable therefore it is not suited for my use case. I can’t stand the idea of having an issue and the whole device basically being e-waste. That’s why I will also never buy a laptop from any other brand.

Wow, awesome to hear from a fellow Husky! No snow in Houghton yet (a little in Copper Harbor), but we’re waiting for it.

An audio-focused module would be a great addition. We’ll add it to the list for a future semester—thanks for the idea, it’s super helpful to see what people are interested in.

And yes, the ice speaker boxes are still a Winter Carnival tradition. Always a good time!

Really appreciate the input—it’s great to see interest from both the Framework community and Tech alumni.

Hello all!

I’m Andrew and I’ve been looking at Framework laptops since they opened shop, I think, and finally bought one!

I received my Framework 12 laptop last week and installed Omarchy over the weekend, largely because of the X posts showing it off. I gotta say, it is an absolute pleasure to use! I’m used to Linux Mint and other Debian/Ubuntu based distros, but had been wanting to try Arch for a long time, and this is the perfect way to jump in, I think.

I really want to thank you guys for financially supporting the project too, especially Hyprland as it is mostly just one guy’s project and so many people are reaping the benefits. He really deserves it, and knowing that some of my purchase contributes gives me all the feels!

Hey, I’m Brian, actually used Framework laptops at my last job, but finally got one for personal use - just got a DIY Ryzen AI 300 13ā€ and working on setting it up. Know some of the Framework crew from past jobs, glad to be here!

Hello I’m new to Framework, I mostly joined to voice my support in that other big thread of the day. I like what framework is doing and I want to see it grow because I believe it’s important as a way to build that Solarpunk future I want to see. Except until recent news.

I’m big on solarpunk and learning how we can free ourselves from big tech, and am doing better at repairing my stuff. I am also a coder.

I’m an I.T. systems administrator for a fairly large enterprise and I love my Framework 16!

I’m a supporter of right-to-repair and I approve of Framework making really good computer systems that are compatible with that.

Hey! I’m an illustrator by trade, but I’ve had an interest in technology as a hobby my entire life and I heard about Framework first through LTT. I would have likely purchased one of your new Desktops, key word being ā€œwould.ā€ I can’t say my introduction to this forum has been the most positive considering I came here after hearing about Framework’s decision to support far–right extremists because they happen to be FOSS developers, which frankly makes me comfortable, but I’ll leave that topic to its associated thread. I don’t know if I’ll continue to use this forum, depends on how the dust settles I suppose.

Hello.

I am a Systems Programmer who creates a lot of CLI tools that run on UNIX and UNIX-like systems. Think stack tracers for assembly instructions in a running program, or low level scheduling and kernel-tinkering stuff.

For the longest time, I was using a 2016 MacBook Pro. Even though I wanted to upgrade, the most sustainable thing to do was to use this computer until the wheels fell off. Which it did in early 2024, and I upgraded to a M2 MacBook Air. This was a short lived affair: I seemed to have gotten unlucky with display issues that would pop up randomly. I ended up selling this laptop pretty recently, and finally fulfilled my almost-5-year-long-dream of owning a Framework (specifically, a Framework 12 in Lavender), alongside a desktop. At the end of the day, I wanted hardware I had control over.

It does remain to be seen how Framework handles the current situation moving forward. Because we all want to see you succeed in a thriving environment, inclusive to all, and welcoming FLOSS software.

Hi,

I am an embedded software developer with 15 years of experience. I work mostly with microcontrollers (ARM, PIC/AVR, TI DSP-s, lately also with RISC-V), using mostly C and C++, lately also Rust, but I am no stranger to other programming languages as well, including HDL (VHDL and Verilog). I have learned programming mostly by myself, although I have an old BSc degree in telecommunications engineering, and I worked in that field also before my programming days begun. Otherwise, during my spare time, I do electronic projects (mostly hobby projects), fix other old/broken stuff (furniture, toys, home appliances…). I have also 3 very young children, so there is not much free time actually. If I can, I like to go outside for hiking, bike rides and swimming and I also play some music instruments to relax from computer screen or soldering fumes.

I first heard about Framework probably 2 years ago, when I was looking for a new laptop. At that time, Framework did not shipped to my home country so I delayed (even after my country appeared in the list of supported locations) until recently when I ordered….a Framework Desktop. After which I also joined to community forum. I still have my old ASUS laptop from year 2014 running Arch Linux, that I have kept in life support over the recent years, mostly with various worn-out/dubious parts from ebay, but probably I will go for a new FW12 or FW13 model at some point. I chose Framework because of the upgradeability - although I ordered Desktop mainly because of I want to run LLM-s locally for various experiments.

I like that Framework is supporting many OSS communities and Linux distros and values adoption to open source mindset and Linux above all, and does not mind offering Windows as well for those who need this.

Already made a Couple of Posts on here but let me formally introduce myself.

Names Oney, ive been Looking to replace my Surface Laptop 4 That i have had since 2021 (4 Years Ago Already??) and decided to pre-order the Framework 16 back in September 2025, as a Jack of All Trades Laptop (Gaming, Video Making, Schoolwork) Which i can hopefully have Long Term (10+ Years Minimum if i end up Upgrading/Repairing Things over time) (as my dad has also been needing my Surface laptop for work purposes, so figured I might as well take the plunge and upgrade to a framework)

I found out about framework mostly from binging Linus, but really didn’t give the Laptop more thoughts other than ā€œoh cool this could be game changing for computersā€ until I started really thinking about what my next laptop should be over the summer (Again the influence for my next laptop came mostly from LTT, but also Andy from Salem Techsperts being another big influence into me getting a Framework. Shoutout to T.G.T.T.E.L)

Lets hope things end up smooth(er) sailing from now until my 16 Ships in December with Batch 4

Oney

P.S I kinda want to dual-boot Windows 11 (which im gonna be using a majority of the time anyway) and a Linux Distro (As someone who is a casual (to steal the word from the MMA Community real quick  ) Linux User, I would appreciate any recommendations for anything centered around Gaming/Casual Use)

For dual boot, install Windows 11 first, and then Linux. The Linux setup will give you an option to set up the GRUB bootloader to boot into either OS at startup.

The Framework has been the best OOTB Linux experience I have had in a VERY long time. I can easily see my new Framework 12 lasting 5-7 years w/ upgrades and repairs. You pay more upfront but the computer pays for itself imo as you use it longer term.
