What should we build next?

I really like this idea for a drawing tablet. We got our oldest daughter a drawing tablet last Christmas and before we got it I was considering getting her a FW12 (still would have needed to wait for preorders to be available). I think the downside would be that drawing tablets tend to need good software, which I don’t think FW would be able to provide. I don’t expect drawing tablets to really need to be replaced or upgraded all that often. So maybe a very niche product.

I would like to see a sort of server backplane (preferably ATX form factor), that can be used with multiple Framework 12/13 or 16 boards, preferably offering full pcie x16 extension slots as well. Ideally we could mix intel/amd and mips (and in future hopefully also arm) architectures this way.

Something like the Turing Pi does for Raspberry Pi’s:

I’m sure it has been requested before but I have not found a post in this thread:

If the FW12 ever receives a screen upgrade, it would be fantastic if we could order a frame with a kickstand to turn the old screen into an external USB-C display with touch/pen support.

Maybe it could even double as the drawing tablet mentioned above?

A case for FW13 mainboards that can support better cooling. TDP holds back what these processors are capable of.

These unofficially already exist on Printables.com and Thingiverse.com!

Undoubtedly this has been mentioned, but it always helps to have plenty of voices: I would love to see general availability of chassis for those who want to build their own Framework laptops from various parts. I’ve seen this available before but I think it was for a limited time - happy to be corrected if I missed something in the Marketplace this time around.

I would say the partner program for service centres should include a direct line to order parts and as the “ecosystem” matures pre stocking “common” parts to fail and IMHO the repair program should be 100% divorced from the sales program so a shop can service them with “inside” support plus warranty on the spot approval (big advantage for “store bought” laptops VS a mail order laptop is the service when it breaks

I would expect a LOT of the phone repair shops and PC shops would sign up if it is easy and cheap

sounds like you NEED a retail presence or at least a LOCAL stockist and “mail order” will not suffice

the big “kill shot” for Linux phone OR ANY non traditional phone is the software and the marketplace

even “de googling” an android is a niche at best practice and is as small as people googling up cheap AOSP flavour handsets to GAIN access to the play store ecosystem

microsoft couldn’t make the windows phone “work” and many people LOVED it and the live tiles and the UX but the ecosystem killed it off

apple is a NO GO period they dont licence there store leaving GOOGLE - ANDROID and the take it or leave it licencing clauses that forces lots of BAD deals onto a OPEN ethos phone platform

I bought a pre owned coin op maytag and it is absolutely owner repariable and maytag EXPECTS the owner to repair it as the warranty is parts only AND I can program the wash cycle lengths down to the time it takes on wash / rinse

make the DUMB TV take FW13 main boards and roll your own “smart TV”

Okey, but what does that have to do with me saying “Proxmox box”?

Proxmox is a Linux-based hypervisor used to run Virtual Machines and containerized (LXC) workloads. I use it to run OpenBSD VM’s hosting my VPN, some development environments, git, file hosting, and a FreeBSD VM serving video media to my devices in and out of my home network.

I’m pretty sure you’re thinking about something completely different, or responding to something else.

The quote seems unrelated but the actual person replied to mentioned washing machines. You somehow got quoted lol

the reply was NOT directed at you but somehow your comment populated into my response AFTER I deleted it and re responded to the correct comment about a framework washing machine / home appliances

I bought a pre owned coin op maytag and it is absolutely owner repariable and maytag EXPECTS the owner to repair it as the warranty is parts only AND I can program the wash cycle lengths down to the time it takes on wash / rinse
also has ZERO “smart” unless you buy the add on module for remote monitoring

the proxmox box comment keeps being re inserted
I was going to make a comment but after reading up on proxmox it doesn’t DO WHAT I (it might but not "built for access control )wanted so I never posted my comment
but every subsequent comment IT INSISTED in adding it in

Sounds like some AI is getting in the way … :open_mouth:

I would like to see an all in one computer made using the FW1 3 mainboard and the FW16 screen Bonus if the frame can take BOTH FW13 and FW16 mainboards
would also like to see very low power CPU options in the FW13 - thinking for both media consumption / “light” productivity with LONG run times and LOW → NO fan operation and could also be used in “server” projects using a standalone case

I agree with this - and could a larger battery be integrated to further increase the run time?

Did someone mention before a dock / hub for the Expansion Card? “You only need” to extract the 4 or 6-slot hardware from the existing laptop and add a USB-C uplink to connect it to any USB-C port …
