I’m looking to buy a new Framework laptop, and I’m having a dilemma whether to go with the 7700s gen 1 or 2. I can’t find any data on how much it actually helps in cooling or noise, other than “oh yeah it gets cooler” or “oh yeah its quieter”
Does anyone have any legit stats (temp and noise wise) as a comparison between the 2? And if you had both, is the gen 2 actually worth the $50 extra?
I have the gen 1. For whatever it’s worth, I haven’t seen anyone post side-by-side stats on the forums before. I’ve not been left with the impression that the differences are very big.
How loud is the fan on your gen 1 while gaming?
If I’m wearing my headset? Barely noticeable.
Not wearing the headset? It depends. Sometimes it’s quiet enough that I can comfortably use the built-in speakers for sound, other times it’s loud enough to make the game hard to hear. I don’t have actual decibel measurements. I think part of this has to do with how the given game’s audio is designed as well.
Fair enough. What games are you playing that you can barely hear?
It’s not so much that any 1 game is hard to hear, it’s more like ambient conditions, system temperature, (and the game engine) and such all play a role. The main game I’ve had an issue with is Battlefield 6, but that’s likely a combination of it being the most demanding game I have right now (high temps, high fan speed) and the fact that I have the BIOS audio drivers set to Linux compatibility rather than Windows compatibility.
Gotcha. Thank you!
My impression from what has been posted and pictured:
- Redesigned fans, possibly better airflow and acoustics
- Redesigned heatsink
- Different thermal paste/material?
- Expansion bay slight redesign for mounting everything
- Same graphics board, just with some quality of life components changed above
With the advent of the Nvidia card now there are two performance choices of add-on graphics for the Framework Laptop 16. Serious heavy lifting would probably be better achieved with a USB4 or Oculink setup, the other two choices still make it portable though.
I mean yeah? Oculink/thunderbolt would be so much better, but the non-portability of a dock is a no-go for me, so I’m gonna go with an internal one.
I’m looking for numbers, like how MUCH noise is reduced my the new fans or how MUCH cooler it will be, not “oh yeah uhh redesigned xyz, trust us its better :3”
anyone tried upgrading the gen1 to gen2 yet? The GPU itself is the same, it’s the housing, fans, and possibly heatsink that’s changed (though I do not see a specific second-gen heatsink or PTM pad in the marketplace)
My guess would be very minimal. I wouldn’t expect any performance gains with V2 of the 7700S. I’d say less than 1% improvement if any. The GPU would have to be thermally throttling for lower temps to make a difference. As for the acoustics it may be quieter but I wouldn’t think the difference is all that much. Personally I don’t think it would be worth $50 more but if noise is something that bothers you it may be worth it to you. If they’re the same price I’d just get the newer one though.
Can confirm my gen 1 doesn’t thermal throttle. If anything, it power throttles after hitting hit’s roughly 100W limit.
About the only time mine thermally throttles is if I’m setting it down on a couch or bed while playing a game and have to walk away from it, but I try to avoid doing that as much is possible.
