Will the screen have any PWM flicker?

I am a bit paranoid about low-frequency PWM flicker, especially on a device that I might want to use in the dark to take a quick note etc.

Do we already know what to expect from the FW 12 display, both at normal brightness levels and at the lowest ones?

This is important, and if Framework doesn’t reply here or add the information to the specs, it will be mentioned in reviews once they are out, since plenty of reviewers also test this.

If you want official answers its better to as from support. These are mainly community forums even if some of the FW people do pop up here once in a while.

Support can atleast forward the question to a correct dep inside framework

I took @inffy’s advice and contacted support and got the following reply.

Framework display uses DC backlight dimming. We use “DC mode” backlight control to avoid flickering.

For more info please check this link: Framework Laptop Deep Dive: 3:2 Display and Customizable Bezels

Granted, they don’t say specifically that the Laptop 12 has DC backlight dimming, and the link is about the display in the Laptop 13. But since the Laptop 13 uses DC backlight dimming, and the question I sent to them was specifically about the Laptop 12, I’m assuming that the latter also uses DC backlight dimming.

Still, I’ve followed up with another email just to confirm.

Thanks a lot for asking, that sounds pretty reassuring so far

Framework has now replied to my follow-up email and I got the following response.

Thank you so much for your patience with this. Our Engineers have shared with us that it does use DC Dimming.

We will be working with our Marketplace team to have this added to the “Specs” tab of the product page, but do not know the exact ETA on when this may be updated.

So, now we have confirmation that it uses DC backlight dimming, and not PWM.
